I applaud World Rugby for making videos like this and stating whether decisions made mid-game were correct or not. It sets the record straight and is necessary for these high-profile calls.

A lot of other sport governing bodies could take a page out of their book.

Great analysis as always. I would also say that George North, not only low but changed direction at the last moment - he turned into the tackler.

What about the "obstruction" (just before that try with a foot in touch) by Henson against Fickou?
After getting up from the ruck, Henson deliberately goes to grab/hug/block Fickou to stop a key defensive player from resetting his position during the following phase.
Even though it's not in the immediate vicinity of the ball, the intention (of deliberately obstructing the defence) seems obvious.

Hi Nigel, do you ever chat with the referees, whose match decisions you've debated on in whistlewatch, about those decisions? Thanks

This GenX F from Texas (decade long hard core European Rugby fan...(that watches alone since I don't know anyone else that knows the game)) truly appreciates your breakdowns. You always seem to answer all my questions. Plus, I think you're awesome!

I'm Irish and I agree with Nigel here on the Lowe try being in touch and the high tackle on Herring should have been a red card. Ireland still would have won. As he also said the tackle on Lowe could be argued.

The onscreen coverage that showed Lowe clearly in touch wasn't provided in the TMO assessment of the incident. One has to question why that was so and how did the process allow the best view to not been seen. There is an issue with host broadcasters favouring their team in the provision of replays. It used to be pretty bad if you were a visiting team in SA. I recall a test match where the broadcasters found footage of an offence by Liam Messam.. It hadn't been seen as part of the normal coverage and all the Refs had missed it, The TV producers replayed it again and again on the big screen until it was seen by the Ref and then play was stopped. The problem is that incidents where NZ teams were offended against, the repays would often not be replayed . This bias by broadcasters goes beyond home ground advantage. Its either fair to both teams or broadcasters should leave it alone.

Nigel is a great pleasure to find yourself here! I am one of your French fans and I have a lot of admiration for you. That said, these cows are yours? You have replaced the lawn of the stadiums with Welsh meadows: great!

That Turner tackle was fine and the law needs looked at, if you are so low at the point of contact that your KNEE IS ON THE GROUND then the blame cannot possibly be with the tackler, at some point the duty of care has to move from the tackler to the person being tackled and i would argue that with your own knee on the ground it then becomes your responsibility for your own safety.
Otherwise we can just see players dropping super low at all times causing every tackle to be high, at some point it moves away from mitigation and into well you are so low that your knee is on the ground that's kinda on you.

@8:45 A technicality...(but I know how refs like technicalities 😋)..The Ireland v England game is not on St Patrick's day (17th March) but is on the 18th. What could be said though is that the match is on "St Patrick's Weekend". Hope that clarifies 😀☘

Nigel: I’m honored that you answered my question (at 5:51: “if the ref has to warn a player against committing an infringement, why shouldn’t the advantage be automatic?”). I agree that warnings maintain flow, which is good. I also agree that warnings increase gaming of the ref and the rules, which is bad (tally: plus one, minus one, = net zero). My point was that an advantage also maintains flow (plus one). It also REDUCES gaming of the ref and the rules (tally: plus two). After a warning, the attacking team can go on to score, or turn over possession. A warning therefore greatly favors the defending team. An advantage prevents the turnover, the bias, and reduces the gaming. Thus, warnings add nothing that isn’t already covered by the rules (advantage), but introduce unfair, undesirable, and inconsistent elements to the game. These can be easily removed by stopping the practice of warning (where else in the sports universe are warnings given?). This would simplify the ref’s job to applying the rules consistently AFTER an infringement, just like they do everywhere else on the pitch. I don’t expect another answer from you (still glowing from the first!). I do expect World Rugby to improve the game by making this small adjustment: cease the practice of warning. Thanks!

Ireland v France
1) Forget the camera angle that was not shown until half time, Lowe's foot was clearly in touch from one of the camera angles that Barnsey was shown.
2) Player welfare is without question paramount.. Sending Antonio off may have deprived us of one of the greatest six nations matches ever..discuss..

First thing to say is it was a brilliant match. The odd - and troubling - thing about this try/ no try was that the ref wasn't shown that angle. Why not? What should be a fair and transparent process has gone wrong.

Thank you so much Nigel Owens, I have been waiting for this review as I have been getting so much abuse from Irish rugby fans who have said that Lowe's Try should have stood because the tackle was an illegal tackle and would have been awarded as an automatic penalty try which I was am not 100% sure that the referee would have awarded a penalty try.

I’m a new fan of rugby and as a former soccer/football referee I would like to know how the Assistant Referees know where the ball goes into touch. Also, can you explain why the flag is clipped unless there is a foul. Next, how do referees remember when a foul occurs especially when there is a long advantage call?

I was impressed with Turner as soon as he realised North was caught by him he shouted to stop play . You see him looking at the ref and waving shouting : player down.

So even being Welsh I never thought it was a red .
