I remember reading an interview with co-writer of this song Sharon Sheeley where she said "Blue Ribbons" was first recorded by Gene McDaniels at Liberty in the early 60s. Always very outspoken, Sharon criticised the record company for not releasing it as she claimed it "was the best thing he ever recorded for the company". No doubt a biased claim by Sharon, however, it would be nice to hear that version so that we can make our own judgement.
