That's amount of meat on the bottomed would probably cost $100 considering the larger of the bunch is likely beef.

Back in 1947, corporations didn't have a monopoly on everything from the farms to the grocery stores with the ability to hike prices beyond inflationary prices.

Just a reminder that in the US the cost of groceries has doubled between 2020 and 2024. The last time it did that was like 1998 to 2019. So a four year period had the same increase in grocery prices as a twenty plus year period. On top of that wages are and have been stagnating since the last minimum wage change in July 2009. Which is also the longest period without a minimum wage change since the introduction of a minimum wage.

To people wondering about the first one
As a person who had braces
This was the final step where they took a 3D Xerox of our teeth to make us retainers😅

$12.50 in 1947 is about $176 in 2024. $.25/ gallon gas = $3.50 today. Average income then was about $3000. By same metric annual today is about $59, 000. As percentage of income those groceries are cheaper today.😮

No boxed food, no instant meals. Basic ingredients for cooking meals at home. Big difference in what is bought today that people somehow call food products.

The top one is seriously nowhere near as bad as the internet says it is. The second one is probably leaving out the hog or chickens that get plucked out of the yard

In 1947 minimum wage was .65 a hour. It’s reflected in the price of everything else. The economy changes and so does the value of everything involved with it

Fun fact in many areas you could buy a home in the suburbs, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and even a basement for 6 to 8, 000 dollars.

I remember when $6 filled up a grocery bag minus any meat.

I was really young so those retainer plasters were too big and I vomitted cause my uvula got glued to it and pulled on it.

It's amazing how little food it took to feed a family of four.

It's almost like it's cheaper, healthier and uses less to cook from scratch.

Ahh the good old days, too bad corporate greed got in the way.

In 1947 the relatively higher cost of groceries due to post ww2 rationing meant this woman couldn't afford milk or a table to set her groceries on. She didn't dare complain about things like this in case her husband beat her or had her committed to a mental hospital for hesteria as he had returned from the war a cold and distant man very much changed from the sweet boy she had married 7 years ago. She often wondered if it was the horrors he had witnessed, the atrocities he had committed or the time he spent as a POW that had changed him from her beloved sweet boy into an angry and bitter man.

Keep in mind the budget they had to work with in each era.

Quick reminder that the minimum wage in 1947 was 40 cents an hour - and it was legal to pay women half of that for the same work.
