Why Is Ireland Still Divided?

Ireland was ruled by the United Kingdom from the 13th century until the 20th century. Despite resistance from the Irish population, who were largely suppressed Catholics, Britain maintained control over the island. The Republic of Ireland finally gained independence from Britain at the beginning of the 20th century after a hard-fought struggle for independence, which resulted in the division of the island into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is still controlled by the United Kingdom. This division has its roots in both historical tensions and religious differences between the Protestant and Catholic populations on the island.

The Ireland are still British regardless of whether they are apart of the UK or not as it a geographic term referring to the British Isles. Meaning if you’re from the British isles you’re British, the same would be true even if the UK dissolved tomorrow. It was considered the British Isles since before the UK even came about which is why they’re referred to as British, it’s like the Iberian peninsula. Irish people like to deny it because they’re salty about the past but this would be like English people claiming to not be European anymore because we left the EU.
