George Carlin summarised the concept beautifully many years ago:
‘The problem with alcohol and substances is they are fun at the beginning: almost zero pain ( costs ) and lots of fun. You get to a certain point where the whole thing becomes unbalanced: cost ( pain ) spikes and fun deteriorates. Now, right there you should say to your “oh, this is not working anymore and if I continue to do it, I am going to die”. But you need a purpose, something to look forward to in your life. And a good support system around you. Unfortunately, many people don’t have either of those and die young.’
George was absolutely right.
I love weed but nowadays I use it a few times a year and treat it like a holiday for my mind. I used to smoke every day and that wasn’t working anymore.
I had a sober Christmas time this year on purpose, particularly because I can’t remember my last 3 because I smoked too much. My parents are getting older and my father has bad health issues. I thought “I want to have vivid memories of this year’s Christmas, and that can’t happen if I smoke”.
Needless to say, best decision I’ve taken in the last couple of years 😊

"Transient states of happiness" hit home for me. I've recognized that I go to weed to cope and try and level myself out, but I find myself unable to feel good in most ways without it. I am sick of having to go to some substance or thing to regulate myself because I haven't been okay with just myself for my whole life. Hopefully that will change.

My step dad was a bad alcoholic and addicted to cigarettes, and the only thing that stopped him was a near death experience. He was going into diabetic keto acidosis, and would’ve gone into a life threatening coma if my mom hadn’t realized he was acting odd and took him to the hospital right away. He physically had stop all alcohol and cigarettes, on top of no carbs or sugar.
He’s a whole different person now, and a far better one. I had no relationship with him before then because he was so cruel and horrible to me and my mom.
Now, he’s genuinely a kind and thoughtful person who’s fun to hold conversations with.
It’s just sad that it took almost dying to get him there.

Thank you for this content I’m finding it very difficult to quit smoking but I’m hoping I’m at a turning point and this video gave me a bit more awareness and bits add up ❤

Think of addiction like the desire to drink water when you're thirsty. Nothing else matters but drinking water.

As someone who has been in addiciton therapy off and on for 10+ years, I see the problem as an insolvable balance (conflict) between the ideology of meritocracy constituted in the fears of not being accepted into groups and the openmindedness required to not be afraid of seeing another individual as uniquely different from yourself, and, by consequence, accepting that you are also not part of a group. In short, seeing yourself as alone or not. Both are necessary, but both cannot be true.

Hey Doctor K could you please make the subtitles higher in the screen? YouTube shorts on cellphone have a lot of polution in the bottom part (especially yours because it advertises a medical campaign)

Remember that if you have ADHD. Instant gratification is the ONLY way you can focus. And it's always been like that for someone with ADHD. They didn't develop it.
