Just wanted to add that some Motherboard have Fast Boot in the BIOS/UEFI which is different and a separate entity than the Windows Fast Startup...

I always let my computers sleep and perform restarts on a regular basis 1-2 times per week based on the amount of use. It keeps their performance optimized, by clearing the memory and shutting down any open programs. With this practice have only had one blue screen over the last 10 years with the 3 Computers in the Household. Although we try to upgrade equipment on a reasonable schedule, have only experienced one device failure, and that was an old laptop with Windows 7 that had a Malware infection that actually took out the LAN on the motherboard as well as the Wi-Fi card. I did a DoD wipe of the Hard Drive and tracked it back to motherboard components. Although it had a SATA SSD and plenty of memory. The Processor was a 5th Gen i5, so I donated it to a Veterans Group where all our Electronics go when replaced, they would probably part it out or get a used Motherboard and refurbish it and give it to a disabled Vet or one of their family Members.

One of the first things I do is turn fast startup off as I generally install Linux alongside Windows. With fast startup enabled it doesn't allow you to install Linux generally. As you said, with an fast SSD (even a slower SSD), it doesn't take long for it to startup nowadays anyway.

I normally just put the computer to sleep most times. But had an issue with explorer the other day being terribly slow and not refreshing. Even restarting explorer didn't fix the issue. So restarted and everything is good in the world again. Admittingly, I booted into Linux but that's another story LOL

You are right the kernel is still going that's how the security updates get installed during the restart ( o -30 percent and then restart, then 70 to desktop)

Sometimes, I just have to press the reset button. There's a game I have that sometimes doesn't run properly and just gives me a black screen. If I try to open the task manager, the game's black screen still displays ON TOP of everything, including the task manager so I can't do anything until I press the reset button.

There is another way to deactivate the fast startup-mode, if your Windows does not show the fast startuo-Option in the Control Panel: you can use the "powercfg.exe at the command prompt with Administrative permissions and use the option /-H (for Hibernate) to deactivate Silent Mode and fast startup mode.

I always turn "Fast Startup" off. Not necessary if you have Windows installed on a SSD.

This is helpful. I just got a new hard drive after my last one finally died after having having for nearly 10 years and I really want it protected.

Thanks! I had forgotten all about Fast Startup on my new laptop. And yes, it had been enabled (by default). Not so no more!

I am getting the blue screen at 1:13 "Your PC ran into..."
Of course there can be 1001 reasons why it happens but can you please make a video about some of the solutions.

Brian! you got your Paramedic Brain on. I hear you say click 'Hardware and Security' you click Hardware and Sound. Not being sarcastic! just saying your in security mode 😊
I've seen so many people have this issue, over the years due to what you just showed: hiberfil sys file another known file to cause issues is; pagefile sys as you know 👍🖖

I had to disable Fast Start-up months ago because it turned out to act buggy to the brand of laptop I use that it had trouble completely shutting down and the RGB keyboard remained on.

Bri, I love your videos.

Interestingly, I don't have "fast startup" with hybrid sleep but my machine starts plenty fast in just 3 seconds to desktop. Also never get Blue Screen of Death (with :) ).

On Linux BTW😂

What program do you use to get the computer info in the upper right of your screen?

Thanks for that. As it turned out mine was on, so I turned it off. It's a fairly new PC and hadden't looked in that cranny yet or some windows update might have turned it back on. My energy plan was also changed and I'm quite sure I had that done.

By default doesn't Windows automatically restart the PC if you get the BSOD with the :( or did Microsoft get rid of that? I know it was a thing since at least the Windows XP days.

This 'feature' of Windows is really annoying. I thankfully know about the restart being superior to a shutdown. This is not intuitive and a user who doesn't know about this (and why would they?) may hardly ever clear the kernel and be thinking they are doing their pc a real favour by doing 'a good solid shutdown', but it is not the case. Microsoft really should have a full shutdown option or reminder to press shift if this is required.
