Today we are looking at the inside of a sewing machine to figure out how exactly it works. How does it sew two fabrics together without passing a needle through to both sides?

No joke, I've been thinking about how sewing machines actually work for the past few weeks. I had no idea, so I'm glad you decided to have a look at this.

Ok. Now freeze dry the sewing machine. Then microwave it in a washing machine

One more random fact: originally a scroll saws/jigsaws were just modified sewing machines. Bottom part with the bobine was removed and the needle was replaced with a small saw blade.
As for actual sewing machines, i had the pleasure to work with a 1929 Singer machine that was retrofitted with a motor instead of that one big pedal. It sounded like a train and honestly felt like one, but would sew anything from fine silk to thick warm blankets with no problems. Really awesome machine!

Thank you for the explanation of the mechanism. It made sense and was actually interesting to learn about.

I am so glad you did this video because I have always been wondering how they work. Next could you see how salt grinders work and how twisting grinds finer?

Cheers Nate that has made the inner workings of a sewing machine as clear as mud :)

Nate, it's almost like weaving. The rotary shuttle moves in a circle and grabs the loop from the needle side and makes a full revolution with it. Then stich and repeat!

I have done rudimentary sewing all my life and this explanation was by far the best I've come across.

I've been sewing for decades, and this has always been a tiny bit of a mystery to me. Thank you for making it easier to understand.

My grandpa was sowing machine repairer.. and i still learned something. I know what bobbin is, what it does but since you can't see what it does when it is in place.. Yeah, this cleared a few things for me.
