How to setup and secure your home network using OpenDNS - Video 2020

Hello world if you want to learn more about network security, IT or anything related to technology let me know and let us all learn together.

Here is how to easily secure your home network for free. OpenDNS Protection is a safer, faster, smarter way to resolve all your domain names while you surf the internet. How it works is that you replace your current router DNS IP addresses with either OpenDNS Home or Family. After this change, they will filter all your website queries, protect, and filter out malicious and harmful domains. Think of DNS as your address book to the internet and using OpenDNS will ensure that you do not call malicious contacts by mistake.

Excellent! I've been wanting to change my DNS servers and internal private IPs, but I've been hesitating. Thanks, Infosec Pat!

How many times did you say "guys"? Very distracting. You don't need to address us each time because we are already watching it! :-)

However, your instructions are clear and excellent. Everything was explained as it was on my machine. It works. Thanks.

Hello
Since I have dynamic ip from my ISP, can I use no-ip ddns hostname in my router so opendns is informed on the changes of my public ip and where do I add ddns hostname and details in opendns account?

Hi filtering isnt working according to openDNS they are working but in reality this isn't working at all
did some random tests and they keep showing, (gave them 24 hrs) and still coming when typing the URL, was reading and it was said that this had to do with IPv6. What should we do? OpenDNS has a solution (not smart) that disable on your equipment the IPv6, but this just doesn't work, the idea is have it controlled on just one single spot. But I guess they need to move forward to IPv6, now days EVERYTHING runs and use it

I’m don’t have the web content filtering option on the free open dns version. Are you using the v.i.p paid version for this demo?

Thanks for this. I am using this as an inexpensive way to block specific sites on my network from my daughter such as social media and chat rooms. I have a list. I have ai mesh setup (ax11000 b rt5300) and it is mind blowing that these routers for how much they cost can’t be configured to block https domains straight out of the box. I mean we paid for that didn’t we ? I tested a tp link 130.00 router and it blocked everything you typed in like a champ. I was so disappointed in asus with the lack of the feature. Maybe if I flashed to Merlin it would work as intended ? Or are encrypted http*s web domains not meant to be read and blocked ? Well thanks for letting me see that manually setting my ip configuration in my PCs makes this work like a charm. You are a pro !

Hi, my ISP has fixed DNS - if I change its DNS, the internet stops working. Changing DNS of the secondary (access point router) also does not work. What should I do? Thank you.

if i want the effect to happen at the router level, would setting the router's ip as the dns (at the device) work if the router has the opendns statis dns ip's set?

OK, sorry this went on for multiple comments. I got everything working again and deleted the prior ones. The reason I could not save the local IP address changes was because 24 did not work for the subnet prefix length on my Windows 11. I had to type in the 255.255.255.0. Then it worked and I was able to save it. I moved on then.

The one thing that concerns me is that I'm getting this message on the Asus router: "Your router's DHCP server is configured to provide a DNS server that's different from your router's IP address. This will prevent clients from using the DNS Privacy servers."

Did your Asus router provide DNS Privacy servers? In other video instructions on changing DNS servers from Windows 11 local machine, they showed options to change encryption settings. I don't get that option on my Win 11 22H2 2261.2428. All I see is DNS over HTTPS off vs on with automatic template or manual template.

Asus was not much help on the DNS Private servers warning. I'm searching some forums for help. Thanks though, overall your video is excellent. I like your channel and subscribed.

I have a question,
if you are using OpenDNS for ur router config and google DNS for ur laptop config that is connected to your router network, which one will be used in that case, your OpenDNS or google DNS? And can you simply bypass the OpenDNS block for a website in a network just by changing the DNS server in your laptop by going to control panel and changing the DNS server to Google?

Infosec pat ha ha ha. That was informative.

Shouldn't I have to disable the DHCP Server Basic Configuration in the router's LAN page DHCP Server tab? That is, leave the default settings intact, but disable the local DHCP server, since we are now calling out to OpenDNS to act as our remote DNS proxy Server?

Everything in the Connection Address also explains how to activate the dynamic IP feature
