Fun fact, this song parody was originally supposed to be made all the way back in 2017 when I first thought of it. The goal was to finish the beat league episode I was working on at the time, then make this parody, then get on to the next champ. Unfortunately, the champ I was working on was Heimerdinger. Ah, but you guys don't even know the TRUE story behind Heimer, do you?

I first drew Heimer near the end of 2016, after Alistar, who had come after Annie. But the Heimer video wouldn't come out until late March/April 1st. Why is that? Well, it was several things. First, beat league had been running for a couple years at that point. I had always had the rule of going back and beating new skins for champs I've done since the start, but it obviously, at the start this wasn't that bad. I could just slap the skin on at the end of w/e episode I was making.

But at this point, each patch saw several skins that I had to go back and beat, to the point that I had to start making them their own separate videos. I ALSO made a brand new rule shortly before this to beat new champions as they came out rather than adding them into the bag, cuz playing the new champ just seemed like the YouTuber thing to do. However, this meant that after I finished Alistar in December, I had A TON of non Heimer related stuff to make. Camille came out, taking up her episode, followed by a barrage of old skins that took up another video.

These videos were starting to take longer to make as well because the burnout was starting to really set in, but it wasn't until I finally got to the Heimer video that things would really come to a head. It was the beginning of March. My plan was to finish the Heimer video in about two weeks, then switch to the rick roll video and finish that by April 1st. The song was still mostly the same, by the way. It was still "Never Gonna Beat This Game", albeit with different lyrics at certain points. This was always intended to be a joke because I never thought I'd cancel beat league haha

So anyway, I start working on Heimer and... it was awful. As in, the footage was just really boring. Again, we were all burned out on the game at this point, so the footage was getting less and less interesting. So I struggled to put anything together that was interesting. I also have a very toxic trait where I feel like the longer a video takes, the better it should be. People were wanting the Heimer video since December, and even though I had to work on two other beat league vids before then (and the Bricky duel around this time as well), I still felt like the video NEEDED to be a banger.

But there's only so much that can be done with garbage footage. I didn't like what I had, and so after about a week, I deleted what I had and started over. And then another week went by, I still hated it, and I scrapped it again. And again. And again. I couldn't settle on anything. Couldn't make anything that fit my standards. I was getting frustrated. It was already late March and the rick roll video was now impossible to do unless I delayed Heimer again... but then I decided I can just make a different music parody for the Heimer video. Instead of trying to hide how miserable we were, I can just make the Heimer video embrace the salt and have it all culminate in a song parody. Ha! Yes! An idea! This can work! But that song isn't what you think...

The original idea was to do a parody of Numb - Linkin Park. I had already done very upbeat song parodies at this point (Yasuo and Me, Uninstall Javi) and so I decided to do something different. The idea was that it'd be overly melodramatic and emo as I lamented having to play Heimer. I had a cover instrumental made and everything as March was drawing to a close...

But the problem is, I'm not a song writer. My parodies typically have me just tweaking the actual lyrics to w/e bullshit I need for the bit. But the Numb parody lyrics posed a problem. The actual song is written in such a way that its talking to someone. "Tired of being what YOU want me to be", "Don't know what YOU'RE expecting of me", "Every step that I take is another mistake to YOU", etc. When I tweaked these lyrics... well, it basically sounded like I was blaming you guys for making me suffer.

This may not have been a problem normally, but the base Heimer video was also what you see on the channel today. Very negative, kinda bitchy, etc. I was worried that the joke wouldn't land and that people may even feel bad, which is obviously not my intention. I tried to find another angle for the lyrics but couldn't find anything, and so I was looking at the reality of needing to once again scrap what I had and start from scratch AGAIN.

Despair gets thrown around a lot, but this was the moment I truly feel it fits. It felt so genuinely awful to hit this wall after almost a month of trying to make this cursed video. This was also the main incident that led to season 3. But anyway, I was about to delete the video and start from scratch again when I randomly thought of the we are number one parody. This is what would eventually be released. I thought of this like... a day before April 1st though, so I basically finished the Heimer part 1 vid as it was, released it. Then did an all nighter to make the parody and release it April 1st so I can pass the entire thing off as planned. So in the end, I still made a song parody for April Fools, and I decided to pocket the rick roll parody for another year...

...but then Season 3 started. 2018 hit and it felt inappropriate. That was almost a year into Beat League's disappearance and the reality that I bit off more than I can chew was starting to set in, so I'll do it another year...

...then 2019 hit, and I was several months into what would be a 15 month hiatus from YouTube. There's an entire other story around this but it's not relevant to this story, but again, it's all because it just didn't feel appropriate to make this kinda parody when beat league was legit mia...

...I think you see where this was going. I just couldn't really make a parody like this given the circumstances around beat league. I had already quit league, season 3 would burn up and die like the dumpster fire it was, and it just wouldn't have made sense to make this parody after I quit the game. Or rather, it felt like it would have been cruel since I didn't even play league anymore. So I accepted that this parody would never exist...

...but then Kaiten was removed and I watched Arcane. I would fall back into this pit and with it, all the unused ideas from years ago were finally available again. Including this parody. Finally, after 6 years in the drafts, I could make this parody! One last chance to get it done. I did have to tweak some lyrics though. For example, the original chorus, which need I remind you was written prior to season 3 even existing, was:

"Never gonna beat this game, never gonna play again, I'm just gonna uninstall and desert you"

...yeaaahhh probably wouldn't have landed well lol. So I made the tweaks and here it is. Finally, this dumb idea I had all those years ago has been made. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
