Did Walmarts CULT PRACTICES Fail Their Employees?

In this video, Christopher Russell tries to figure out why Walmart failed in Germany as well as many other places. If it is a success in so many countries, why failed in Germany? I even thought about visiting a previous Germany Walmart that has now been turned into another chain but theres no way I could see anything that would tell me the story of what might have happened. So anyhow...this is the conclusion that I have drawn. I hope it helps.

Walmart was simply unwilling to operate under Germany's strict laws, especially as to worker's rights and operating hours.

It's less about the culture than about Walmart not being able to operate in Germany without breaking the law, which tells you a lot about them.

They also didn't realise exactly how fiercely competetive Germany's discounter chains like Aldi, Lidl and Penny are and were basically eaten alive.

There are no Walmarts in Australia, they can't legally operate here due to their use of slave labour.

I am from a german-speaking country, and more often than not, employees attempting to help me as soon as I enter a store annoy me rather than make me feel welcome... But I also don't like it if the staff ignores me when I obviously need help and actively try to get their attention.... a balanced approach is best, imho :-)

Hallo. Ich kenne Walmart aus Köln. Eine Freundin fand da damals einen Job. Und Sie erzählte mir, was dort abgeht.

i walked into the one in munich and a greeter came to me... we don´t have them ... i knew them from my visits to the usa ...but still got weirded out by them here...well...in my opinion the most thing that was their lack of understanding of working culture here.... walmart tried their hire+fire methods here, then they tried to violate every labor law here in the book (like not paying overtime, not giving the vacation time, not giving sick leave and so on...) what broke their necks... the anti-union-stance of walmart... they tried to keep the unions and "betriebsrat" out of their stores... they have just transfered managers from the usa to germany... without thinking about german "work-culture" ...

Maybe we're just a grumpy bunch, but it felt downright creepy to enter a German Walmart. Maybe you could put it like this: Imagine going to a supermarket in New England and being greeted by Bostonian housewives dressed as hula girls, playing the ukulele and handing out flowers and bff-bracelets to everybody while they're absolutely sure that all of this is a bad idea. That's about how the Walmart grin-and-greet friendlyness felt for me.

A friend of mine worked there. That cheerchant before opening was something he seriously did not like and neither did his coworkers. Things like that have a scent of NSDAP and SED to many Germans.

Walmart had the audacity to tell our government that they wanted to start business in the Netherlands, but only if we were to substantially lower or even get rid of our minimum wages. Not going to happen. So they haven't bothered here.

Yes, it were different reasons that were a thing of culture, work culture:
- The smiling that was felt to be fake by the customers.
- Offering help when the employees were with 3m to a customer that was felt as bugging while doing your grocieres.
- The chant that rembered some to Nuremberg rallies.
- Employees should spy on each other which put a Stasi vibe to it and was also unlawful.
- Illegal clauses in the contracts like employees can't date each other
- Misunderstanding of german work culture and working laws for unions
- Breaking the rules of the competition law with predatory pricing
- Prices were to high for a discounter

Last point broke Walmart. They did not recognise that Germany already had a very strong competition between the supermarket chains and that the profit margins were are very low in this business.
They tried to put a discount concept on a shop with a broad assortment. Our discounters have a small range in their assortments and they have a big influence on producers and the buying price.
Walmart was to expensive with the wide assortment and could not get the same prices as Aldi, Lidl, Penny or Netto. They tried to compensate the disadvantage with predatory pricing which is illegal in Germany.

Just imagine, Aldi in the U.S. would demand their employees to stare at the customers... It would fail as well and just as deserved. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Andere Länder, andere Sitten.

Fun Fact: Customers thought the employee, who packed the the shopped goods, is going to steal the it.

I think the real reason was the whole morning ritual you had to do before the shift, with shouting wallmart slogans and thanking the leadership. Germans saw that and thought : nah not falling for that again.

I believe I was shopping at Walmart once. Out of couriosity. I was super shy as a teen. It was... strange. There was a greeter. Uhm, do I need a ticket to shop? No. He was hyper friendly. Is he on drugs? Nope. Do I need help? No, I am able to find my way. Nooo leave me alone. Go away. Bad ... what ever you are... I ran and hid. OK finally save. Lets shop. Oh this american store has no american food. How anticlimatic and stupid of me. Well German stuff only. Expensive stuff. No I do not need any help. Why are you smiling like the Joker? Go away. I'll tell everyone who asks you were a gem but... just go away, please. Okay lets buy... loose leaders and get the hell out of here. So I managed barley to escape unwanted assistance. I am sure the poor employees felt terrible too. It was sureal. Non of us wanted this but they had too. And then I finally went to pay my stuff and... to my shock someone packed my stuff in bags. Many bags and all wrong. Terror! Never went back. OK there are those things that tends to shock most northamericans. Superfast cashiers and the ability of most germans to keep up with them and put their stuff in the carts or bags. To keep up we have a system. Or better every German has his or her own bagging system.
Some unpack the carts according to make things go even smoother. If you want to be extra nice to the cashier you stack same items so they can be even faster. My system is frozen stuff in one bag, stuff for the fridge in an other... makes it easier to unpack and put stuff away at home too. And than there is that unkown guy who trys to help and messes everything up, gets in your way and slows everything down? Not gona happen! God may have mercy with you if you make people wait longer in a line than absolutely necessary. They will glare at you. Little old ladys will yell “Zweite Kasse bitte!“ If you are not fast enough, no worries there is an area with tables were you can pack your bags after you have paid in every supermarket. Just throw everything in the cart and pay. People who bag your stuff for you is what broke Walmarts neck in Germany. All of what you mentioned had it's part.

Wertkauf and Real are prove that Wal-Mart style stores can function in Germany very well.
As you said in your video, their main mistake was cultural ignorance.
Germany is all about respect. People are first, business is second.
Treating your employees like rightless slaves instead of valued beings and your customers like wallets on legs instead of valued beings is a guarantee for failure in Germany.

Gut gemachtes Video!

If my boss would tell me whom I not allowed to date, I would tell him that I will go date his mother than and leave the company for ever. If a couple is unable to do its work because they can’t concentrate, than the company should fire them but otherwise it is not the company’s business.
The help offering sounds horrible too. The only stores I know that from are shoe stores and I absolutely hate it. Every time I see an employee walking up to me I just hope that they wont talk to me. I know how the concept of shoes works, if I would ever need help I‘ll ask. At groceries it would be even worse because you have to do it so often. So I am glad that that did not prevail, America has a lot of great exports but Walmart under such conditions is not one of those

I'm from Germany and I've always felt, that Walmart stands for values and a certain stlye of business, that I detest. So I would have never bought anything in a Walmart. :)
