I head down to Berry BMW Heathrow to check out their brand new BMW X2 M35i Demonstrator. After covering where this model sits in the range and what options their particular Demo has, I take it out for a 1st drive, is the B48 going to ruin the incoming M135i...?

Great little car, had a x2 M35i for a while now and it’s pretty rapid with a quality finish inside and out. They are not the cheapest but if you get them at a good deal you can’t go wrong with one of these if your after a small SUV crossover.

idrive 6 not 7? This car is a competitor to the new Clubman JCW with the same engine and X drive. same power output. Hope you get your hands on one of them Jo.

The xDrive from X3 M40i is exactly rear wheels biased as you said, tuned by M Performance, not only the M5. The grip, feeling and performance is superb in that car, sports car like in Sport mode and you can't believe your are in a mid-size SUV with almost 1.9 tons. The xDrive for X2 with transverse engine mount is by default mostly front wheel biased, but I don't know the setup for this M35i. There is the first ever BMW front wheels mount LSD M-Sport Differential which helps a lot with the sporty handling in curved roads. The torque of 450nm is a big figure for 2l and this power, usually similar engines from other brands have 380-400nm. Also, the gearbox seems to be a tuned Aisin with 8 speed, not ZF. X1 and X2 have the 8 speed Aisin gearbox and recently a 7 speed DCT for some engines.

I hope they do a 40i version for the new 1 series the B48 isn't bad but lacks low down torque and the power tails off at around 6k (from my Mini JCW experiences)

Same power as the 335i from 2009 but whatever. 4-cyl, boo, hiss, etc. There's always a tatty, second-hand six that drinks petrol, smokes like a chimney and eats the cam bearings at the back of the block you can buy for buttons, and say you have a six-cylinder BMW :)

Great drive review - love the X2 and finally some oomph over 20i or diesel - bronze gold metallic popular at launch suits shape better than white - and perhaps a neutral interior just not black :)
