I learned how to drive manually in a 1998 jeep Wrangler. That thing needed every gear to get up to speed. My new manual kia forte gt i can go from 2nd or 3rd straight into 6th which was new for me. I also rarely ever down shift to slow down. If im coming to a stop I usually just throw it in neutral and brake.

I remember my younger brother when we were learning how to drive a manual, he's very good at emergency braking :-)

Hi, have you thought about doing a longer video on skipping gears, especially changing up? Advantages, fuel ecomony etc.? Thanks!

Should you try and avoid block gear changing, and try to drop one gear at a time as much as possible? Because dropping down gears gives a bigger engine break, so would you ask your students to always try to anticipate and try to drop one gear at a time, and only do block change when there's not enough time and need a quick stop?

Can you do more videos on skipping gears!! I absolutely love your videos and learnt everything through here. I have a problem with being relatively slower than fellow drivers.. For example, my start is so slow until I saw this video today. I've been going through gears 1, 2, 3 etc. and all the cars always speed pass me. My reaction time I notice is incredibly slow in a lot of scenarios and im a seasoned driver of 10+ yrs in automatic.

As you are far to young to know; today manual transmissions are virtually all synchromesh design. Prior to synchromesh transmissions one had to shift through all the gears.

As far as i know it's okay to skip gears as long as your gear and the speed of the car are in the matching range. while normal braking it's better to reduce your gear one by one according to the speed your car is reducing to without letting go of the clutch pedal, so in case if you don't want to stop the car completely and accelerate, you can let go of the clutch pedal and be in the right gear.

There is a theory question saying that missing out gears saves fuel. Is this true despite the fact you accelerate in lower gears, which usually uses more fuel?

I love coming back to this video - I recently passed, my instructor taught me to skip gears up for dual carrigeways and downshift when coming off them and onto roundabouts and i've thought it was a good and useful technique - however, a family member who i drove with before my test, told me not to, are there any reasons NOT to downshift or any old ways of driving that were taught that meant some people advise against it? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

sir, while skipping multiple gears for upshifting do we need to hold the clutch at biting point slightly longer to drop the revs from the high revs to the lower revs???? pls answer

Can being in wrong gears make you fail the driving test? For example if i stayed too long in 3rd or never even went past 3rd?

Little bit confused in the second clip slowing down from gear five to one. No explanation given, have you just applied brake and clutch control before going into first gear?? Surely you cannot simply have taken your foot off the gas that long without changing down

Ok so basically its called racing where you're still in gear 2 when you're going 70mph XD.

Also I found that playing Gran Turismo helped me out a lot with when to switch gears. Play some races and go in manual mode.

Is skipping gears from i.e 2nd to 5th healthy for the car? I mean can it harm the engines performance or the car as a whole in the long run?

If my fourth gear is grinding, can I plan to never use my fourth gear again?

You need to check that blind spot properly!

Then why instructor says change gear step by step ...? And I have heard from a random guy, if I don't change gear step by step then it will be problem in gear box. Is that true?
