Should You Boil Sea Moss? Boiling sea moss to make gel vs not boiling it at all is a common subject discussed. Even though sea moss preparation is pretty straightforward, the question of should you boil sea moss comes up quite frequently. After my previous sea moss review videos, many people asked this question and some also said boiling is the best way to prepare sea moss to drink so in this video, I make sea moss gel both by boiling it and not boiling it answering the question of should you boil sea moss once and for all showing you how to make the best sea moss gel.

I'm Jamaican. I initially give it a very quick washing to remove any dirt. Then I boil it and sometimes blend it. Do not throw away anything when boiling it.

I have found that if you boil it on medium heat for a short period of time, because it doesn’t take it long to began to melt, and then let it cool and blend it… It last wayyyy longer in the fridge than the none boiled method. So it will not mold quick. It will last longer than a month, probably closer to two months. But I don’t let it boil i let it warm up and stir until it’s practically melted, let it cool and then blent and it lasts so much longer🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m from Trinidad and Tobago. Initially I tried soaking our local sea moss and it did not gel up. Upon further investigation I was told that our sea moss is more fibrous therefore you have to boil it. Additionally, heat does not kill minerals and nutrients.

Traditionally, they boil it in Jamaica. Imma do what the OGs did.

I soak the seamoss overnight in water with some lime or lemon juice, this helps cuts any scent. This helps to soften up the seamoss.
I then boil the seamoss with about a cup of water and use a swizzle stick, the seamoss gets really smooth and consistent. This mixture is then poured into a mason jar, it thickens up even before going into the refrigerator. Boiling will help extract nutrients and minerals that your body may not be able to break down and by pouring everything into the mason jar, you def lose nothing.

Your video has been so darn helpful. I really thought boiling it was taking away of the good stuff you need. So basically it’s a lil more potent.

You can do something in the middle. After you thoroughly rinsed it soak it in spring water for 24 hours and then pour the water you soaked it in in the pot and just barely warm that water up. And then pour that hot water in the blender with the sea moss and blend it all up period it Blends better when the water is hot. And it pours out the blender easier.

Hi; because Irish Moss is a DEMULCENT to epithelial cells, it moves waste matter in the intestines and the gas you’re experiencing is likely due to blockages in the intestines that it’s causing to move, and eventually pass. If you experience additional issues with gas, you may want to wean-off of the milk products, since its pH is acidic. Best 2U, and thanks for sharing!

I first wash the Seamoss in a basic water. Then I soak it in Spring water, allowing it to swell and soften. I Then cut it up for better blending, and use the water it was soaked in to use those minerals. Add the water gradually to blend until it looks like apple sauce. And allow to chill in the fridge. You'll right if you boil the nutrients will be in the water. And there are nutrients in the soaking water as well. I forgot to say that the soaked Seamoss will swell and feel like cooked noodle, , not overcooked ones.

Hello from London UK 🇬🇧 apologies for my late arrival to this party. For my method I decided to compromise and after thoroughly washing my seamoss, I cover it in boiling water (so that any precious element that is heat sensitive was bruised rather than destroyed). Once cooled down I leave it to soak overnight and blend until smooth the next day. That's what I've been doing for around 3yrs now.

My Jamaican mum used to boil it for 20-30mins, but she would strain the seamoss - separating the moss from the liquid - and use it a further 2 more times then discard. She never blended the actual seamoss and liquid together

I also believe that you don't have to over boil it, just a little heat.
One can add a dit bit of preserving powder, it will last much, much longer.

If it’s porridge you can boil it if not no need to boil flaxseed when boiled will be thick and stretchy. You can add sea moss to it without boiling to make a drink. I boiled my sea moss after blending and refrigerate. It thickened on its own when I boiled it. CAUTION too much water will water it down. People are making things more complicated than it needs to be. It simply depends on what you’re doing with it.

I Soak my sea moss for 24 hours. Then I clean it. I boil water to a rapid boil. Then I drop my sea moss in the pot. Then turn off the stove or range. Put a lid on the pot. The heat will finish the job once it cools. You can store just like that, it will be ropey. Or you can blend it. Either way keep the water. Refrigerate your Sea Moss Gel, use as needed. 😋

1- cup of sea moss gel
3- cups of Almond milk
or any kind of milk
1- teaspoon vanilla extract
1- teaspoon almond extract
1 & 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Honey Sweetened to taste.
Blend for 4-5 minutes
Start low then increase speed.

You can add fruit for a fruity flavor.

Good morning.
I just met your video. Great job
What I noticed about the boiled one, is that it gets more firm after refrigerating it.
The one that's not boiled, after refrigerating, I scoop it up and it's much softer.
Nevertheless, my sister sells bottles of them and she doesn't boil it.
Her customers says it more healthier and beneficial not boiled.

Trinidad here we soak the seamoss overnight wash it and put it to boil for about 20 minutes. We usually put in a bayleaf or a spanish thyme leaf so it does not smell fresh

I have always boiled the Seamoss when preparing it for consumption. My only difference is not using milk to sweeten it. I now use honey and/or brown sugar, then I add nutmeg, vanilla essence, almond essence, 1 whole lime and 1 capful of rum. I sweeten it to taste then I refrigerate in a glass jar or bottle.
I then drink a glass of sea moss everyday.
You know when it is good quality sea moss when after refrigeration, it looks like jelly so you can eat it with a spoon or shake it up or stir to drink it.

I used to boil it but lately I have not been boiling it because I prefer the taste of non boiled moss. I use the water from the soaked moss to water my plants. I never throw the water away.

I’ve done it both way. I started off by boiling it and then I decided to try the soak and blend.

My reasons for no longer using the boiled method are:

1) my daughter did not like the smell. She could smell and taste it in shakes and smoothies I did for her. I did not have this issue with the unboiled seamoss.

2) I find that the unboiled isn’t as jelly as the boiled and I like it that way. It integrates quicker into my dishes. It also applies easier when using as a face mask.

Aside from that I do not believe you lose any nutrients for either method and it is just really a matter of preference.
