When the going gets tough, who’s toughest?

That’s the question Top Gear set out to answer when we sent the new Toyota Land Cruiser off into the Welsh wilderness together with the facelifted Mercedes G-class, the latest Land Rover Defender, and the 4x4 that apes ye olde Defender, the Ineos Grenadier.

We sent these four 4x4s clambering over rocks, wading through rivers, and generally doing the sort of stuff they’re designed for but never actually do in the hands of most buyers.

Which clawed its way out of the mud ahead of its rivals? Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage and Tom Ford are your referees…

A friend and myself once got stuck going up a scree escarpment in an old Defender. It kept digging itself into the loose scree. A first gen G Wagon showed up going down the same escapement and offered to help. We winched the two cars together and the G Wagon proceeded to pull the defender all the way up the escarpment in reverse without getting itself stuck and without struggling to pull the heavy defender. It did the ~100m run in one go without stopping. The old G Wagons are IMMENSE off road machines 🔥 🫡

I can tell you after 5.5 years of G Wagon ownership (same redesigned chassis) there is NO shake or “shimy”. The G is rock solid and you will never hear a rattle or squeak.

As most people in the UK would drive their 4x4 on the road the obvious choice is the Defender! But, The Landcruiser is a vehicle of respect!!

More cars should have overhead button consoles like the Grenadier. Manufacturers really should tap into our childish need to feel like we're piloting the Millennium Falcon or a 747 rather than driving round a tesco car park.

The 110 and 130 have exactly the same wheelbase, so the 110 is not the ' mid wheelbase' option. The 130 just has a longer rear overhang.

Land Cruiser is the best value being the cheapest (relatively) of these SUVs. And you don't lose much compared to the other and it has better capabilities than each of them in specific categories.

A have a friend who has a 45 year old Land Cruiser and he drives this thing every day well over miles on it with no problems whatsoever says he doesn’t need to buy a new one cause he feels his still has a long way to go probably pass it down to one of his kids

When it comes to Land Rover product, you need to let the Terrain Response do the work. In every instance, when the wheel started to slip you let off the accelerator pedal. The trick is to stay in it a little longer, and the TR do it's job. It's an amazing bit of kit.

It's funny because other new Defender 110s (factory spec) have managed the bomb hole without touching anything.

It's a 5-year trip in a Grenadier across the world towing a Patriot X3, which we live in. We set off from London in mid-July 2023 with our two young kids and we’re approaching 50000km. Why does everybody refuse to put the cars in the same tires when they test them??
The tire is the single most important factor when driving offroad.
Having one car on street tires and another one on Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs makes the comparison basically worthless
