Affiliate links that I have put in the description of this video link to those companies that I myself have purchased from and had good dealings with as a consumer. I would recommend these companies! These help support the channel, and don't cost you anything to use, so if you're going to feed your plastic addiction, this is a great way to do so!

Lesson 1. How to kill the golden goose.
Lesson 2. How to cook it.

Sometimes, companies like Hasbro will deliberately do something that will get massive fan outcry. Because then they'll real it back ever so slightly to something that is also insidious (just not as insidious) and they get to pretend that they're listening to their audience, while their audience is now more accepting of the new terms even though they're still shitty. I think that's what they're doing here

Wizards is shooting themselves in the foot. Consumers will have to find another game system where they can get the content they want. Back when magic the gathering came out I soon realized this was a company that was going to exploit people's gambling problems. I saw the Rules Lawyer's recent video and he goes into great detail how WOTC is going to <expletive> 3rd party companies. Sad times for our hobby. I hope folks boycott WOTC in the coming year.

Imagine being like, “almost time for our movie, now seems like a good time to piss off our core audience.”

So do you finally now understand the intent behind the new name "One D&D"?

One OGL to rule them all.

EA: we have perfected the art of taking a successful IP and monitizing it until it dies.
Wizards:hold my beer..

You missed something, It eliminates the 1a OGL removing the ability to create content for just 5e. If you tried, because 5e is compatible with "One D&D", they can sue you for making content for it. Its complete BS. ON top of that, by changing the OGL WotC Can go after 3rd party creators that are already rolling like Piazo and all the other big ones. This new OGL is a complete shit show. Honestly, this is something the FTC needs to get involved in and do some oversight. I would recommend sending emails to them and at least trying to bring it to their attention, this is basicly taking away free markets.

I hope the pushback is positively nuclear. I think I'm done with Hasbro though, whatever happens. Hard thing to say as a lifelong D&D player but hey...I have over a thousand other TTRPGs in my library. I'll be fine. It's the next generation of roleplayers I worry for. They're the ones we have to speak up for.

Funny thing: WotC started out as a third party company that made cross-system sourcebooks, and which was sued by Palladium for daring to use their system. WotC eventually won (the "you cannot copyright mechanisms" defense), but needed money quickly so they made a few copies of this new card game the fledgling game designer Richard Garfield had, since the board game he wanted them to publish (RoboRally) was too expensive to make.

If this gets taken to court Hasbro will (assuming an actually fair court, which -- who knows these days) will find that they don't actually own as much as they seem to think they do. The main value of the ogl is to set the expectations between content creators and Wizards. Wizards doesn't get to unilaterally determine how the law works.

Also seriously check out Blue Sky Minis, they're great.

One DnD to rule them all, One DnD to find them,
One DnD to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Hasbro where the Shadows lie.
Where the Red Wizards of the coast reign 🩸🩸🩸

This is absolutely appalling, Wizards have gone to war against their customers

I just found your channel, and I love that you're spreading the word about this. I was skeptical of One D&D because I saw it's announcement as a precursor to this type of behavior. Corporations are so predictable.

Most players are probably not clued in to what's going on with the OGL, which I'm sure the suits and ties at Hasbro are aware of. However, I think (and hope) that they underestimate an important part of the DnD community: DMs are almost by definition a passionate and highly community engaged bunch of people.

On the end-user side, DMs are the ones who are will be most impacted by this change, and from the reactions I've seen so far, a lot of DMs seem ready to leave DnD for alternative TTRPGs.

The impact of this could be big, DMs are a small minority of the DnD community, but they are the ones running the games. There is already a huge DM deficit in the DnD community; an exodus of DMs would be bad.

This is insane I feel like Wizards are reading the GW playbook making changes like this

They are so gonna lose so much good faith, and money for doing this.
This is frustrating and very saddening to hear.

Great video!

So, fortunately, they can't just terminate OGL 1.0a with a snap of their fingers.

As I understand it, people must sign the new 1.1 to terminate their 1.0a (assuming they are even publishing under it).

So, don't sign it (I know, easier said than done lol).

This is literally what all of the big creators are talking about doing right now with their lawyers. More power to them.

All of this really reminds me of the transition from 3.5 to 4th edition. If I recall there was no OGL for 4th. That resulted in Pathfinder becoming it's own system, it was previously a 3rd party D&D publisher. Pathfinder turned out to be way more popular and even overshadowed D&D for a time. I wonder if we could see something similar?
