the two kingdom system failed to satisfy biologists at the level of microbial forms of life.

Many of the microbes possessed both “plant-like” and “animal-like” characteristics simultaneously, and many others enjoyed such characteristics which were unique to them and not found in either plants or animals.

In view of the this, a solution was made in 1866 by E. Haeckel. He introduced Protista as a new kingdom to accommodate organisms exhibiting characters either common to both plants and animals, or unique to their own.
