The BTP guy whilst sounding professional and proper failed at everything. Asking for your name after you had said it multiple times shows that he wasn't listening and his single brain cell was busy trying to recite the training script. Totally understand why you gave details so that you could get home, the fight can take place later in a civil court, no need to waste your time when your kids are more important than a minor principle.

I served twenty years as a Guard with British Rail and I have never known anything like this. In my job I had to take a three hour verbal entrance examination which was re-taken every two years. I had to work alone and I was armed with only a whistle, detonators and ticket nippers. We didn't have fools wandering round with all that gear stuck to their fronts and a bad attitude. Even in my day the British Transport Police were rather incompetent and stupid and I have to admit that I enjoyed running rings around them when they got things wrong or tried to get out of doing their jobs properly or refusing to act on my instructions. I've had many a laugh when recalling the antics of the BTP in cities around the country and how I left them speechless after confronting me with BS. They really do take on that job because they are incapable of doing anything else. As for these new clowns on the block, we don't need goons. We need porters and chargemen back, we need barriers for entry and exit points not electronic gates. A lot of crime is committed onboard a train and we used to deal with it swiftly, that's why the Guard is there and we would only call the police to take somebody away as a last resort after the individual persisted. Most criminal types think that they can get away with crimes committed on a train and are taken aback when they don't, but even more staggering is the incompetence of the BTP. I would have to spend hours writing reports and preparing evidence for the court. Prevention is better than cure.
