How To 'SING SCREAM' - SAFE Tips From Audioslave & Periphery (Chris Cornell, Spencer Sotelo)

Spencer's Full Singing, Screaming & Vocal Recording Course:

It's a delicate and vulnerable balance between singing with distortion and all out false cord screaming.

Lots of aggressive vocalist's consider this to be the hardest kind of vocalizing because if you don't get this balance in your voice, it's easy to hurt yourself and sound just plain horrible. It's risky, but once you dial it in, it's the best sounding distorted vocals you'll ever hear or produce!

Let me show you some simple ways to begin to dial this in with your own voice (SAFELY)

The technique that seriously changed the way I sing rock and metal! This break up technique is so fun to play around with, and it gives you so much more freedom with your aggressive vocals! Thank you for all of the amazing videos Chris! You are making a huge difference for so many singers!

Man, some months ago your (and some other youtubers) tips helped me "sing scream" for the first time in my life. I literally felt like Cornell so I immediately hit "record" and recorded a vocal part for a song in basically 1 or 2 takes. AND it didn't hurt my throat. Actually it felt quite good to be honest! So you can DEFINITELY sing powerfully without doing any harm! Cheers man

In my studies I feel like I’ve discovered that every scream actually does have a pitch. I’m hard pressed to find any example of a scream that I don’t hear the “note”. It took a very long time to develop an ear for it and I only ever learned because of learning to scream myself. Some are obviously more “sing-scream” than screaming, but I can still hear the pitch.

It’s helpful when learning to develop range in screaming to understand so that you can explore higher/lower screams similar to how you’d approach higher/lower singing! I’ve actually increased my singing range because I first discovered how to expand my screaming range. Kinda backwards but whatever haha

Sounds an awful lot like the sort of vocal style Devin Townsend employs, where he screams with a strong melodic backbone behind it.
Thanks so much for your videos Chris, they really have helped tremendously on improving my vocal range and techniques. My big problem right now is diet, and the time required for warm-up and practice! It's so hard nowadays to set aside time where you can warm-up properly and also be loud to practice things like this!

It's so crazy that every time I struggle with some particular technique, you upload a video talking about within a week. Thank you!

I love your videos. I started doing my own recordings and have been so worried about my vocals. What you do here on YouTube has given me confidence and has helped me in my singing. I have a deeper voice and thought i would just be able to be a baritone backup vocalist. Thanks for all you do sir.

One of my favorite singers who can kind of scream and sing is Bob Mould from Hüsker Dü. There is so much emotion in his screaming, people consider it an artform in the 80s hardcore scene. You can hear it in ''Eight Miles High'' and ''Broken Home Broken Heart''.

Just worked on week five of your course then this popped up on my phone 🙌 perfect timing. Gosh I friggin adore crush from periphery, what a great song, wicked vocals. Spencer seems to change his voice, variety and intensitiy of tone and screams so effortlessly. Someday I'll get there and sing/scream like that, too. I'll not stop.

You really are working your way through of the Rock and metal legendes, aren't you? I love love love these videos.
I think Landon Tewers from The Plot In You and Rory from Dayseeker would be reaaally cool vocalists to scrutinize in the future. What do you think?
Anyways. Thank you for your great work!
Cheers from Germany,
Dominik

Hi Chris! I bought Aggressive Master Plan course long ago but I just started studying it today. And even though I feel that I overworked my voice a bit, I’ve got some great moments of finding that amazing heavy grit similar to Gojira, which I would love to get! The main problem for me is pushing too much. I found ways to overcome this with clean singing, yet I need to get that I don’t need to push as much as possible to get these amazing screams, because otherwise it activates some of my throat muscles. Appreciate your work, I think you’re the best teacher out there explaining heavy singing!
