Total Alkalinity
Chlorine efficiency is affected by pH. The change in pH is governed by total alkalinity. Maintaining proper total alkalinity is therefore important for proper disinfection control. It is also important for maintaining water balance. If the pH is not at the correct reading you must fix the alkalinity first.

Calcium Hardness
Adding hose water, evaporation and the addition of pool chemicals cause the calcium concentration to increase. Heavy rainfall, system leakage and source water low in calcium hardness result in a decrease of calcium concentration. Calcium hardness should be tested at least once a month. (200-400ppm) and 300ppm is the ideal range for your calcium hardness. (www.bobcatblue.com) / click "chemical" to see the complete ideal chemical chart for ideal ranges.

Cyanuric Acid (CYA)
Cyanuric acid is increased by manual addition or by the use of stabilized chlorine. CYA is decreased by dilution. If a form of stabilized chlorine is used, CYA should be tested weekly.

Other Testing
Testing for nitrates, phosphates, metals and TDS should be performed on an as-needed basis. Testing monthly will in most cases be sufficient to spot any developing trends, allowing the pool operator time to respond accordingly. Testing for salt concentration, hydrogen peroxide and potassium monopersulfate should be performed according to existing conditions. (for more information visit www.bobcatblue.com)
