There is a federal law that protects the consumer against surprised billing that is what this is. Surprised billing is against the law. It was the hospital's responsibility to inform you if they were in network or out of network they're going to tell you that's not the truth but the new law says they are and on any computer in that hospital they could have pulled up if they were in network or not and how much you would be charged especially if it was pre-authorized. This bill under the law should not be your responsibility. The only way that you can be left responsible for the bill is if you signed a document stating that you were aware that they were out of network and still received the medical care.

Insurance is just a mirage sold like it’s a safety net, until you need it. Then you are hammered, it’s disturbing

Similar thing happened to me. I had my daughter on separate UHC insurance for about 7 years, $100/month. When she was 17 she cut her thumb tendon trying to open plastic packaging with scissors. I looked up in the handbook for her insurance, found two hand surgeons and picked the nearest one.
Comes time for insurance to pay, they said he was too expensive and were only going to pay half! They got out of me a lot more than I got out of them.

Totally sucks, however time and time again even though the hospital is in network, some of the doctors may not be.

Check the 2023 federal laws on healthcare billing. Threaten to report them back because 80% of all medical billing is up charged. Ask for itemized bill. Often times when you go for out patient surgery( colonoscopy)they charge individual items when it should be bundled. Hospitals will be most items 3-4 times instead of once. Goverment is collecting billions of fines(which we pay)so I’m hearing from attorney general not to pay bills $500 next year is suppose to go up to $1000. You tube has lots of great videos. 2023 law they cannot report it to credit bureau or harass you.

Why i love health sharing / co-ops. Medi-Share has been a breath of fresh air compared to the nightmare of coordination of benefits with both of my grown children's medical 'insurance'
