Day 36 of spinning yarn to knit a shirt: Mulberry silk facts

Mulberry silk is not from mulberry, it's actually from an insect, Bombyx mori, the domesticated silk moth. The main food source of the caterpillars is mulberry leaves, and the silkworms spin cocoons before turning into pupae. When the cocoons are unwound, it's the only natural filament fiber.

I have a mulberry tree in my yard and small moths that look just like those moths appear in my yard. They're so cute!

We had mulberry trees outside my old kindergarten! We loved looking for moths in them, or just stuffing our faces with mulberries lol

Those moths are so cool looking. We love our mulberries. We’ve never had one of those on them though.

The etymology of the word silk is rather interesting. It's travelled and changed a fair bit.

In 2020 I had the idea to start cultivating silk moths and ended up planting a mulberry tree in my parents garden. Maybe not the best decision 😅
Still havent sorted the moths and the tree needs pruning now!

This is so cool to learn cause I am currently knitting with mulberry silk! I wondered why it was called that.

mulberries are my fave fruit (probably fave food actually) of ALL TIME! but we can’t buy them in stores bc their water composition is too high and they rot too quickly, but this was really fun to learn!

Can you explain what you mean by a filament fibre and why that’s different to other fibre types?

I remember this Chinese goddess named Leizu she is the lady of the silkworm and if remembering correctly one story of her was how she found mulberry trees with the cocoons and grabbed some during afternoon tea one of the cocoons fell into her tea and when she tried to pull it out silk came out instead. She asked the Yellow Emperor(her husband) for some of those trees and I can’t remember the rest

Rubbing silk between my fingers is my self soothing behavior. I keep a mulberry silk scarf or ribbon within reach 24/7. Thanks to the wider commercialization and popularity of mullberry silk, we no longer boil the poor moths to get the fiber. When I found that out as a young child, thanks butterfly garden 🙄, I cried for the poor moths and wouldn't wear my silk shirt for a long time. My mom threw that sucker in the washer with everything else and never batted an eye. 😂
BUT...I gotta be "that person" and point out lotus silk, which actually IS made of the goo inside lotus stems. I saw a video on it, and it's weird as heck. There also have been a few niche uses of spider silk, but as the spiders are much smaller and produce less silk I don't think it will ever have a commercial market like mulberry silk.

Do they already have slightly altered thimbles for this? You chould put a divit for the material it probably exists. If not u could order one from a 3D printer
