A senior police officer has criticised poor planning after 1,700 prisoners were released early across England and Wales to ease overcrowding. Nick Smart, president of the Police Superintendents’ Association, warned that many inmates were freed without proper programs, leaving police to handle the consequences, including the risk of homelessness and reoffending.

His comments came after the first releases under the SDS40 scheme on Tuesday, where some prisoners celebrated with champagne. Smart said police are unfairly caught in the middle, tasked with managing the fallout from offenders being released early, often without adequate rehabilitation or plans.
