He never seems to overplay. Id liken dave to a polyglot who speaks many languages and when its time to speak he picks the language and speaks with authority and eloquence.

Other drummers are likened to polyglots who in one sentence attempt to fit in as many languages into one sentence which is an unnatural way of speaking.
