In the 17th century, in the Netherlands, one of the most insane financial frenzies in history began, known as the "Tulip Mania." This phenomenon elevated tulips to the level of valuable securities and made them symbols of luxury and status.

It all started with the import of tulips from Eastern countries to the Netherlands. These flowers were exotic and rare, which made them particularly desirable among wealthy merchants and aristocrats.

The demand for tulips grew, and speculators soon emerged, willing to pay significant amounts for them. Initially, regular tulip bulbs were traded in deals, but soon shares representing ownership of these bulbs became the subject of mass trading on the stock exchange. Prices of tulip shares skyrocketed, and investors literally rushed into this market, hoping for huge profits.

However, like in all bubbles, this one eventually burst. In 1637, the prices of tulip shares collapsed, and many people lost substantial sums of money. Tulip Mania became a symbol of excessive speculation and an insatiable thirst for quick riches.
