Preventing a Second Wave of Infection and Understanding Immunity | COVID Conversations

George W. Rutherford, M.D., is the Head of the Division of Infectious Disease and Global Epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He has worked extensively in public health, with an emphasis on the epidemiology and control of communicable diseases, and has held a number of positions in public health agencies, including having served as State Health Officer and State Epidemiologist for California, Director of the AIDS Office for the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Director of Immunizations for the New York City Department of Health and an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at CDC. He is currently leading several efforts to address the COVID-19 epidemic, including serving on the committees advising California Governor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

What a great show! I live in Canada where I've been advocating for the use of masks. Our public health officials have been a little slow to come around on masks but that's been changing over the past week or so. Glad to see Dr. Rutherford stress the importance of the use of masks. Thanks for a really interesting show - it was great to learn so much from a really straight forward expert!

All this stuff: hygiene, distance and masks - none of this works perfectly.

None of this needs to work perfectly.

We just need all of this to work approximately 60-75%. That's the same effect "herd immunity" would have (given R0 of around 3).

Then the virus would no longer find enough new susceptible people and the chains of infection would be broken.

My understanding from the presentations from Dr. Rutherford himself, among others, in Grand Rounds and elsewhere, is that there is no significant transmission in the outdoors, so it's not clear to me why he thinks you should wear a mask outdoors. I wish we could probe that.
