Dorian Gray is beautiful... charming... powerful... cursed. Young Dorian Gray arrives fresh on the London social scene and is taken under the wing of corrupt, devlish Lord Henry Wotton who introduces him to the seedy pleasures of London life. When Dorian sees how incredible he looks in a newly painted picture of himself, he swears he would give anything to stay as he is in the picture - even his soul. He finds himself slipping deeper and deeper into a world of sin, sex and celebrity, and the evil deeds necessary to protect his terrible secret. Dorian finally finds true love with Wotton's outspoken daughter Emily, but how long can he hide the secret behind his eternal youth? Is it too late for redemption or can she unlock Dorian's humanity and save his soul?

The book clearly says Dorian has blond hair... Am I wrong???

It doesn't matter that Dorian isn't blond. It matters that this is a horror film and the story is a moral and artistic fable.

The novel has a creeping but pervasive atmosphere of sensual corruption, this has shocks and a CGI picture pulling faces. And Firth is miscast. This was a job for Jason Issacs if ever I saw one.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine.

Fearing the story was indecent, the magazine's editor without Wilde's knowledge deleted roughly five hundred words before publication.

Despite that censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding the public morality.

In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press, although he personally made excisions of some of the most controversial material when revising and lengthening the story for book publication the following year.

The longer and revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray published in book form in 1891 featured an aphoristic preface—a defence of the artist's rights and of art for art's sake—based in part on his press defences of the novel the previous year.

The content, style, and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own right, as a literary and artistic manifesto.

In April 1891, the publishing firm of Ward, Lock and Company, who had distributed the shorter, more inflammatory, magazine version in England the previous year, published the revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

The only novel written by Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray exists in several versions: the 1890 magazine edition (in 13 chapters), with important material deleted before publication by the magazine's editor, J. M. Stoddart; the "uncensored" version submitted to Lippincott's Monthly Magazine for publication (also in 13 chapters), with all of Wilde's original material intact, first published in 2011 by Harvard University Press; and the 1891 book edition (in 20 chapters).

As literature of the 19th century, The Picture of Dorian Gray "pivots on a gothic plot device" with strong themes interpreted from Faust.

I feel urge to stand for this movie. Yes, you are right, it is not like the book. But STILL it is one of my favorite movies EVER. I have seen it maybe 15-times and it's still fascinating to me, also after all those years. Ben Barnes, in my opinion, is a perfect embodiment of an astounding male beauty and I don't care if Dorian is blond or black. The story itself is dark, eery, somewhat creepy and very very sexy, even obscene. It's definitely not for everyone. People with esthetic sentience and awareness of their dark sides should love it.

Even though this movie looks good, i feel as though it should have stayed a book. Leave Dorian's youth and beauty to our imagination.

Not casting Douglas Booth as Dorian Gray was one of the great missed chances of all time.

Mahiré m'a dit que mon parcours lui faisait penser à ce film. Hum, flatteur? Lol ou tout simplement glauque. En tous les cas le film est très intéressant il a presque à mes yeux un schème psychanalytique.
