"Sex?"
"Three times a week."
"No, I mean male or female?"
"Sometimes male, sometimes female, sometimes camel." "Oh, dear!"
"No, no deer. Deer run too fast."

this reminds me of my cousin talking to this uscis agent...they asked "sex?" she straight up said "yes" 😭😭😭

Hopefully amusing: In Swedish, "sex" is the word for six. In Swedish, you spell sex "sex", too. Homograph words are weird sometimes. Surprisingly enough it's almost never confusing thanks to contexts usually making it obvious, especially as we have compound words in Swedish. So 'I want six apples' isn't pronounced the way 'I want sex-apples' is, not that sex-apples is a thing but I couldn't think of a better example right now.

Actually it was good because my crazy ass male friend used to thought like it is sex with male or sex with female and he ended up with writing F on form 😂😂😂

"Lost in translation" clearly works both ways.

I (as a resident of a SE European country) felt extremely uncomfortable during my English class, when we had to fill out a form in our textbook which included several categories of information, and one of them was sex. When I finally gathered the courage to ask my teacher about it, I was relieved.

Those forms used to just say sex and have a blank spot. My dad used to write in the word.”yes”

The origin of the word is just a division - latin secus. The erotic meaning is relatively recent - 20th century.
Gender - related to 'genre' and 'genus' also became a euphemism for male or female-ness in some contexts.

Forignlanguges are tricky. Especially when one word can mean different things in both languages.

Like in Swedish the word for sex/gender is kön. But kön is also 'the queue'. So "do you want to switch kön" can lead to some confusion. 😂

I met a Chinese girl fresh off the boat about to start her Freshman year of college in the midwest U.S. She was very sweet but somewhat naive. Her English was good but she learned British English where meanings can differ from U.S. English, such as 'rubber' which means a 'eraser' in the UK. So in complete innocence she strolled into the bookstore of her christian University and asked the flustered and embarrassed cashier where they kept the rubbers.

Oh my god. It happened to me at the hospital 😭😭 I wrote nothing on there. They had to explain that it meant gender.
