It's only illegal if you try to use it as regular money once it's "defaced". The original intent was to make sure people didn't shave silver or gold off of earlier coinage then pass off the underweight coin as full legal tender.

That's also why you see milling on dimes, quarters, etc. It was to keep people from shaving silver from the edges before the days when they went to clad coinage in 1965.

You can use the whole cent since zinc will also reduce silver nitrate.

Interesting. You should have shown the copper foil with silver better. Cool though ! You can do #Alchemy by just droping a iron object in to copper sulfate and another displacement reaction occurs. It also looks like Magic.

According to Title 18, Chapter 17 of the U.S. Code, which sets out crimes related to coins and currency, anyone who “alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens” coins can face fines or prison time.

And if you sold the silver you'd be losing a lot of money in solvent costs. Like you said, it's a single replacement reaction so it came out of the solution. You didn't make silver like you said you did in the last few seconds. Gonna really confuse some people who don't know chemistry

No! It's not illegal to deface money. However, it is illegal to deface it for the purpose of selling it for the raw metal value.
