Speculation about merging disks is easily debunked on this example: 14 disk (meaning both "flat" and "spiral") galaxies when merged would arrange not flat, but random volume, like elliptical galaxies, and not something like our Milky Way. Distant galaxies are as mature as our Milky Way, but why they look 10 times smaller? Because of concave lensing explained in 1st chapter of free "Time Matters eBook". It is opposite to gravitational lensing, but well-known effect, and it is caused by time speeding up (in the past time was slower than today: 14 billion years ago, it was twice slower than today, and 32 billion years ago it was 12 times slower than today - that comes from Hubble's redshift measurements - and that factors diminishing effect by 2-12 times).
