Tormek T-8 sharpening system: Getting Started with Alan Holtham

Alan Holtham, English woodturner and journalist, shows you step by step how to get started and use the Tormek T-8 sharpening system.

Learn how to:

• Use the jigs included with the Tormek T-8.
• Mount and dismount the grindstone on the machine.
• Apply oil and honing compound on a new leather honing wheel.
• Sharpening with water and why it’s important.
• Use the scraper to clean the water trough.
• Use the Stone Grader to adjust the grindstone to a finer surface, and back again.
• Use the Truing Tool to make your stone round and flat, if needed.
• Use the “marker method” to repeat an exciting edge angle.

Finally broke down and bought the T-8, a very heavy price but worth it! Sharpened my first chisel, and wow can't wait to get all the rest of my tools cleaned up with a sharp edge!

I used this model when in school as a cabinet maker. Absolute joy to use and I can't wait until I can afford to buy one for myself (which I hope happens in the next 1-2 years). Until then I have to settle with a Scheppach as I need a wet grinder (I've spotted small nicks on my chisels and they need to be fixed), but I'll definitely run all tools over the Tormek T8 when I get myself one, as I don't believe any other brand can offer the same level of quality sharpening. As a cabinet maker who primarily work with hand tools and thus use _a lot_ of blades, the Tormek T8 is *the* wet grinder to get. It's definitely worth every penny

Brother has one and wish he lived closer, so I am just going to have to get a T8 for myself. My wife just cannot understand how someone can get so excited about sharpening things, but as you rightly observe it makes it more pleasurable to use things that cut nicely. Thank you for the video. I've just inherited one of these grinders from my late uncle, I couldn't believe how quiet it is. Its a quality bit of kit and this video is a godsend. 👍
