NBCDI's Vice President of Movement Building and Strategy, Terrance M. McKinley, shared powerful insights at the Center for American Progress panel, "Protecting Americans from Extreme Heat." He highlighted the disproportionate impact of extreme heat on Black children and families, rooted in systemic inequities, like limited access to green spaces and rising utility costs.

Rev. McKinley emphasized the fact that these challenges stem from historic disinvestment in Black communities, which exacerbates health issues such as asthma and chronic heat stress–factors that negatively impact school performance and overall well-being for Black children.

He urged action to expand cooling spaces and improve healthcare access, which aligns with our Eight Essential Outcomes for Black Child Development. Collaboration with government and nonprofit organizations is crucial, and partnerships with NBCDI and its affiliates are key to addressing these longstanding disparities.
