A Brief Tour of the Nutty Putty Cave Entrance October 2024

Since the Nutty Putty Cave rescue story with John Jones has been going so viral lately, the Salt Lake Tribune asked me, having been part of the rescue efforts, to take them up to the entrance and talk to them about the experience. I decided to shoot this video while I was up there to show people what it looks like today. There's not much too it. It's a cement-plugged entrance and that's about it. It was nice to read through the memorial plaques though and remember John and his family. This was the first time I'd been up there since the rescue.

The Salt Lake Tribune article and video should be coming out sometime in the next month.

I can’t even imagine being stuck in that cave upside down in a tiny crevice for 27 hours straight before your body just gives out, quite a horrible way for your life to end.

I’ve been inside that cave, 2 years before he passed. It was very claustrophobic and terrifying. Never did a cave again after that!

It crazy that your right there standing knowing that he's still stuck inside forever

Insane to think about how his remains are actually still in there. May John Jones rest in peace

EDIT: Yes, I know cemeteries exist and I'm not saying it's cool he lost his life. It's not everyday someone is buried in their death spot. Nor is it everyday you see something that many people used to explore get shut down because there's a body that even rescuers couldn't get out. It's interesting to me. You don't have to agree....

I just realized that this video is made by one of the rescuers aka Brandon Kowallis.

This is so eerie and sad. This was an old hobby of his that he decided to revisit after gettin married and having children and it claimed his life. He had a 1 year old and another baby on the way.
I heard that his widow remarried a few years after he died and had a child with her new husband and I wish John’s entire family nothing but the best. But it’s still heart wrenching to know that his first two kids will never know their daddy, especially since he died when they were extremely young.

It's eerie knowing the remains of john is not too far from there still upside down. RIP

Mad respect for you for trying to rescue him back then. It’s a shame that it wasn’t successful and that the cave is now his grave. This is one reason I don’t plan on spelunking.

Idk why for the past week especially, I keep watching these cave dive videos or stories. I feel like I’m not alone in this right?

As bad as this was, I think the Thomas Edward Benning story was worse, he went caving alone with a lamplight that went out on him while exploring tight passages and eventually got stuck in a tight narrow spot but noone knew where he was until he was discovered nearly 2 years later even though they thought he died in a cave, it took along time for them to even find him, he died alone and in the dark basically starved to death or died of hypothermia.

There's something so tragically eerie about the thought of his body still stuck there in the very position he died in.

I can't imagine the pain of not being able to bring your loved one home and give them a proper burial.

For those that do not know: someone died here so the cave is permanently sealed off as a grave.

It’s scary how a simple mistake such as missing a turn can cost you your life…

RIP John 🕊️

The scary part of this is that somewhere out there, there is some careless daredevil who would want to try to break through the concrete-sealed entrance and go inside again...

This is so eerie. It’s depressing to, stuck for 27 hours with no way out.

You hear the story, but I had never seen the actual place. Looks like it's in the middle of nowhere. But there were flowers, so the family must still come often to visit I guess. Can you imagine? Dude thought he was crawling into an afternoon of fun, but he was crawling inside his own grave. Place became a tomb. R.I.P.

After watching a doc about him I feel really sad. I wish I could see this in real life. It's so surreal that he will remain there for thousands of years...Rip John.
