Mayor Bill de Blasio's legacy after 2 terms in office

Bill de Blasio swept into the New York City mayor’s office eight years ago promising a liberal remolding of the nation’s largest city that would level deep inequities and reform police practices.

He had some successes, delivering on a promise to offer universal pre-kindergarten and curbing the police stop-and-frisk tactic. But the legacy of de Blasio’s two terms has also been shaped by strained relationships with both police and the police-reform activists who propelled him to office, public discord with the former governor and gaffes memorialized in skewering headlines.

As he closes out the final days of term, de Blasio is contemplating a run for higher office, a bet that his early achievements and his steering the city of 8.8 million through the pandemic will stick with New Yorkers more than the flubs and conflicts, separating the substance from style.

A fire ravaged Rome while Nero, the Roman emperor, played his violin. He watched the city burn. I know it's heavy handed, but de Blasio had the opportunity to be the greatest mayor of NYC. Instead he left New York City to burn. He 'fought' (polarized) the ‘evil’ rich to ‘save’ the poor. He polarized the ‘evil’ NYPD because of one murder that occurred in Minneapolis MN (NOT NYC but Minneapolis). As a result, the NYPD de Blasio’s reaction to the BLM looting, the police stopped policing (worth mentioning: because of some vendetta de Blasio held against them regarding his biracial son!?!?). He practiced ‘reverse racism’ in promoting and demoting NYPD brass. As a result of all this, New York is more dangerous now than ever. Major corporations are now relocating and because of its sky rocketing crime and Covid, the tourist trade is now one eighth of what it was in 2019 (The tourist trade before de Blasio was 74 billion dollars which provided over 100, 000 jobs for New Yorkers.) It’s now 800 million dollars with thousands unemployed. Moving right along….the city budget was $70 billion when he took office. He spent money like water. Among his many projects was ThriveNY which he put his wife, who was completely unqualified, in charge. (Rep. Nicole Malliotakis is now calling for a full investigation into the unaccountable 1.5 billion dollars spent on flaky program to help the poor- Hey de Blasio! Why don’t you help the middle class?). Because of his spending, he increased the city budget from 70 billion to 103 billion, and decided to make up for it by taxing the rich. The result? A quarter of a million tax-paying NYers have moved out. In 4 short years (his last term) he has set NY back 30 years. Bye, bye de Blasio!
