I found truth in Graham Hancock words, why are we looking for ourselves in ancient advanced Civilization's. They were more team oriented, where as we are more individualized.

Astronomical observation were used as daily time keeping as well yearly calendar events. We used paper and watches then cellphones they used rock sundials and positioning markings on rock.

As improvement began it freed up time for more specialized individual tasks that needed to be done. At least that's my take on it and we've had more ups and downs with World catastrophes, as well as local ones to say that it all ran in a linear time-line...
