Pro tip, if you're going to buy old cars and don't have infinite money you should invest in some tools and service them yourself.

The most important thing is how often you need to spend that money

Beautiful car…saw a lucky youngish fella driving one in Manhattan around the beginning of summer and definitely have him the Nod, to which he smiled and gave it a few tevs….
He’s a gentleman already at that age🤷🏻‍♂️

I owned a Honda for 15 years and put over 250, 000 miles on it and didn't spend that much for service for the entire life of the car.

My E61 535xi MT says hold my beer.

By 225k mi it had not one, but two repair bills exceeding that by 4 figure amounts.

Bought my E39 M5 on cars and bids and it’s been absolutely solid! Love this car

We just can't forget that even though you bought the car for 15-20k, the car still cost near 90k when new, the service costs are set when the cars are new. A 17k service on a 90k car isn't as crazy as you'd think. Still ridiculously expensive, but when put into perspective it makes more sense.

11 pages... Lol. My volvo has over 50 service records + I've done work on it myself.

Hence why most BMW resale values crash, the maintenence after warranty kills any advantage buying used out of warranty. Unless you can buy parts at cost and work on them yourself then maybe?

I went to test drive an M3 6 years ago. The salesman was driving it out of the garage when the engine grenaded itself. Pass.

My E39 530i got about $6k in services all related to the transmission before I bought it for a grand. It was throwing a trans failsafe due to the alternator going out. Replaced it in a couple hours and she was cherry again.

With all it's gone through, that's probably the best grand I ever spent. Bought it riding on Konis, nice 19" rims, and a Rockford Fosgare amp and Boston Comp sub.

And that’s why my 2006 AMG has a warranty. lol.

Not bad all things considered, and everything is 100% functional and esthetically pleasent, a bag of peanuts for a e39 lover!

As a current owner of 3 German cars, my tip is to invest in friendships with a mechanic shop owners. 😂😂

It is expensive, but in the grand scheme of things it’s not too bad for what once was the pinnacle of performance saloon motoring. Heck if you’ve ever owned a Porsche I bet the pricing seems downright pleasant as just replacing a couple of headlights on a up-spec’d P-car can run someone that amount.
