What the recent protests in Syria tell us about Assad's grip on power

In mid-August protests erupted in the government-held Syrian city of Suwayda after Bashar al-Assad's embattled government slashed fuel subsidies, driving up the cost of living in a country where the economy was already battered by high inflation and a civil war that has gone on for more than a decade.

The protesters are mainly from the Suwayda's Druze community, a religious minority group which has remained neutral for much of Syria's civil war but has begun demanding the ousting of Assad at a time when he has enjoyed renewed diplomatic support in the Middle East after recapturing much of Syria.

Asmaa al-Omar, a journalist based in Istanbul, says that these protests show that despite Assad's international rehabilitation and his claims that he has emerged the victor from the decade-long conflict, it is far from over.

Glad the Syrian people are speaking up for basic things like food and water. If only people in America would do the same for homelessness..

No matter the support Assad gets from Russia, Iran und Iraqi shiia militias, no matter for how long the west wants to ignore his crimes against us and no matter for how long time it needs to oust him. The Syrian people said the final word a long time ago. There will be punishment for all the crimes he and his party commited. No matter what and whatever the cost maybe.

No more wars ⚖️ enough is enough. Peace and staying calm is the best option. Chaos leads to war and innocent people always pay the price.

As long as the army supports president Assad no one will topple him, and Assad keeps the army happy, they have some of the biggest salaries in Syria and are well experienced and armed, the only frustration in the army is that Assad is reluctant to move on and defeat the last few areas held by opposition and the Turks.

Assad and his followers should not go unpunished. We demand the release of all political prisoners and that the fates of the many disappeared people be clarified. Our goal is an orderly political transition without chaos and destruction. Our top priority is the implementation of Resolution 2254, which includes a peaceful transfer of power.

Over the past twelve years, the young people, the children of 2011, have grown into men and women. They helped shape it and are continuing it. Our goals have evolved in the same way. Today we don't just want the regime to fall - we demand that its relatives be brought to justice

Assad needs to take the stolen riches and moves to UAE. Step aside. No one wants over 50 years of brutal oppression.

Its been 10 days and the protest are still on. If you know the deep politics behind it you should know that Syria will be divided.
