hey chris, any 2020 update for GoLang? Dependency management has been made a lot easier with Go Mods, Generics also being introduced which was some of the main reasons people were put off the language initially

Great video, Chris. As a former perl programmer and current python programmer, it's interesting to hear your commentary on the comparisons between languages. One thing I noticed is that you use 'functional' several times when I think you mean 'procedural'. I'm definitely looking forward to watching other golang videos from you.

Python can eat go
I mean
Snake can eat that cute ridiculous squirrel

Chris, maybe I misheard you but Go was written in C, and is now self-hosted.

I want to learn Go but I I feel like it would be pointless. Is is good for backend?

You should learn Go because of the hype, just like Ruby on Rails, Scala, Groovy, etc. once were overhyped. Anything you can do in Go, can be done in Java (or any other language) as well. You can now even compile your Java app to native binary file, which makes the startup extremely fast and memory usage extremely small. I don’t see any reason to learn each year a new language, like the title of this video suggests.

I wouldn't consider Go a core systems programming language. For that you may be better off with Rust. I think Go is okay for such work, but is more suited to massively concurrent application server programming.

Go/Node.js well I know Node.js is not a language but it confuses me when people say we have shifted from Node.js to Go

Wow. I haven't heard the term "noob" in many, many years.

Python only sorta not really offers true parallel programming due to the GIL. I often run into people who are not aware of this caveat. The library concurrent.futures technically does this, but the way the byte code is passed around and serialized is massive overhead for many use cases. I know a guy who used to love Python and is all about Go now. If Go is really badass in ways that Python sucks donkey, I have to attribute its lackluster adoption to the craptastic economic environment it was released into. Post 2008 madness.

Probably good information, but the delivery is too esoteric.

Python is NOT based on C. It's based on Modula. A very old language. There is nothing about Python syntax that even remotely resemble C. If anything Go is far more C-like than Python

I can tell you that if you learned C# first you will absolutely hate GO. I really hope people stop promoting it so that it can die peacefully.

Don't use python 6 because it uses a crap butterfly as their mascot - Yeah, I'm going to use that at my next group meeting.

Go is fucking terrible. Excuse my language, but is Go even a fucking language? It is basically C, but worse.

Platform support is SHIT. I can NEVER get it working on BSD. Barely works on Linux and MacOS. Shameful.

I've been writing C since 1984. Not leaving until a real alternative comes out.
