Why not use ISBLANK on the third problem where you want empty cells to be left as empty on the transposition?

So, I'm losing my mind trying to find a formula to simplify my work.

Generally, I need a formula which will count the nonblank cells in Column C, if Column A = "x", and Column B = "y".

Specifically, I need a formula which will count the number of results for a particular date range on a particular shift:
A B C
Date Shift Result
1/1/16 1 2
1/1/16 2 0
1/1/16 3
1/2/16 1 0
1/2/16 2 1
1/2/16 3 1
1/3/16 1 0
1/3/16 2
1/3/16 3 0
ETC...

Let's assume I need total number of results for 1st shift in 1st quarter (assume "etc" dates continue thru the remainder of the year). For the values shown, I'd have 2, 0, 0 which is a total of 3. For 2nd shift 1st quarter, I'd have 0, 1, "blank" which is a total of 2. I'm thinking there's gotta be an array that will help with this.

Any help that anyone can provide would be much appreciated.
