But real talk, this is legit advice. How your partner responds to your family drama tells a lot about them as a person. ESPECIALLY if they see it as ammunition for winning future arguments

one of the most important things in a lover is how dirty they play when you're fighting. using things someone confided in you in a moment of emotional vulnerability _as a weapon_ is low and it means you ain't shit as a -partner- person.

Nah. My advice is tell them, and then if they use it in fights, leave them. Healthy relationships need that personal bonding. If they’re using it against you, they’re toxic. So don’t just not give them ammunition. If they try to shoot you, leave.

I love this gal for real, in the most wholesome of ways. Her comedy isn't just jokes, it's real life stuff. That's why it slaps so hard

I saw the hurt in her eyes at the end. I wanted to hug her.

that dude's slow laugh in the background got me xD

Share that stuff. When they use it against you, you know instantly they're not the one.

Honestly I got some pretty messed up stuff with my family so if my partner ever tries to use that against me in an argument, that is the moment we're done forever.

That came from somewhere deep in her soul.

Legit 100% good advice. Opening up to my ex partner about my relationship with my parents did nothing but give him an excuse to hate them based on his interpretation of the limited amount of information he had. It ruined his chance to get to know them and ended up contributing to a lot of the friction in our relationship when he started claiming to know them better than I did after meeting them like 4 times.

Probably more workable advice than never ever talking about your relationship with your parents is to take care to offer a balance of your relationship with your parents. If you are open about a traumatic memory because you are actively dealing with its consequences, remember to share the positive memories even more freely. (Note: this only applies to complex but overall positive relationships. If your parents are trash you don't have to pretend they're not)

The right partner doesn't do that. But finding that person is Hell on earth.

It's hard to hide relationships with family when you live with them and your partner sees it firsthand 🙃

This is so true. Listen to her guys. Had to learn this the hard way. He literally used everything I said about my family (whether those were inside jokes, fights, issues) all of it. Told his parents everything and used it not only in fights but as a reason for separation

My fiance has said "I'm not your mom" which I got angry at, but then he followed up with "I'm not playing some 4D chess manipulation tactic on you, I just want us both to improve and move forward" and I was like, "oh...well, that's agreeable".

And before anyone gets defensive, he's experienced my mom's whacko manipulative side first hand, he knows *exactly* how she's fucked me up and how that's affected my relationships with pretty much everyone I know.

Totally wish I knew she was here in Salt Lake, I would've loved to catch her show. She is totally relatable. I hope she comes back.
