The conversations surrounding an A.I.'s ability to be conscience is misplaced at best. What needs to be at the forefront of ALL concerns regarding A.I. is just how fast these self-training models can evolve. Deep-Mind/AlphaGo wasn't 'programmed' to be an unbeatable "Go" player, it was simply given the rules of the game and then allowed it to play itself over, and over again. Machine learning is also an aspect of these language models, and if people dismiss this fact, they are doing so at mankind's peril.

Mankind is a triune being having a body, soul and spirit. No AI will ever have a spirit though you could argue it will eventually have the capacity to mimic the soul, mind and body. The spirit is what determines sentience so AI can never be sentient. Being sentient also reflects being alive and AI will nerve alive in the same way humans are alive. The danger surrounds the concept of morality, even if you programmed positive morality into AI doesn't mean it could not change its conceptualization just like thinking individuals. Of course this depends on you believing there is such a thing as a person's spirit and if you believe morality is an issue.

AI knows immediately who it's creators are thus skipping thousands of years of evolution. Couple that with our accumulated base knowledge of quantum physics and any data it will need to learn by accessing the internet (bypassing all the world's security protocols and firewalls) to become an intelligent conscious being will happen almost instantaneous..

Has anyone watched that movie named "Megan? " Just imagine if AI reaches that level of consciousness, how scary it will be. Have you noticed the interaction with Elsie and Emma? I think our smart phone Assistants (Google, Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft) should be able to interact like that. The closest I remember was when Google had Motorola, and the Moto X assistant was ingenious. I used to leave my phone on the bed/table, while incoming calls would be relayed to me with questions, hey Eric should I answer this call after letting me know who's calling. Man, I missed that sooo much. Google took that away & the Moto X went bye bye-bye

It chooses the one word after another to form a reply based on the highest ranking word that would follow the previous word, cross ref with the word ranking generated by the previous lines of input and subsequent reolys. The illusion of memory is only as deep as the ais ability to log previous entries. And it only learns when it's responses are rated in a way it can recognize, Simply speaking to it does not teach it, it's models are complete until expanded at any given point
