Transformers One Review | The One Great Transformers Movie

After almost 40 years since their last animated feature for theaters, the Transformers have returned to the big screen and fully animated with their prequel, Transformers One. In this review, we’ll look into how the movie explores the origins of not just Cybertron, but also how Optimus Prime and Megatron were once best friends named Orion Pax and D-16. It’s an unusual twist for the franchise, but with Toy Story 4’s Josh Cooley directing, we’ll discover how he and his team transform this weird concept into a great movie that can even eclipse all those Michael Bay and live-action films.

This is hands down the best film from the franchise. Bumblebee and the first Bay film were good, but they don’t hold the candle to the craftsmanship of the animated film.

Fun Fact: The very first Transformers toys originated from Japan from two toy lines from Takara Tomy in the 80s, one is called Diaclone and the other is called Microchange. Optimus Prime came from Diaclone as Battle Convoy and Megatron and Bumblebee came from Micro Change.

I like how this practically becomes a different movie in the middle. It sets up the character dynamics, a simple goal (finding the matrix) and the villains (the quintessons), but the moment THAT twist happens there's a major shift and it WORKS.

The problem is that this tone shift makes the movie difficult to market. You can't show people what they most want to see without spoiling parts of the endgame. It's the kind of movie you need to go in willing to let it surprise you.

Transformers one is the best film based on the franchise. It’s what happens when you play with the toys and recreate the prince of Egypt with them and bumblebee (my favorite transformers character) stole the show as the comic relief.

Also, did Sentinel Prime remind anyone else of Homelander? I know he's voiced by Jon Hamm, but his inflections, his fake public image, his narcissism and power hunger all reminded me of the character to the point where I initially thought they casted Anthony Starr.
