For fuck sakes, I searched through the whole android docs to find out how to create that "rounded corners" thing around a calendar or whatever object I wanted, and found nothing.

I am amazed, you aren't familiar with LinearLayout. LinearLayout has an attribute called orientation. Default orientation of LinearLayout is Horizontal. In your case, it's orientation is Horizontal, that's why it's horizontal gravity is not working. You don't need to set the textView using leftMargin, just add Orientation = vertical in LinearLayout tag . Make the width of your textView parent and then set the gravity = center. It will work

Is it possible to have the textview on a separate activity/fragment? I was hoping I can have the user select a date on one page for the calendar view and the next activity or fragment will show their date they selected. Anyway I can do that?

I does not work properly. If the user doesnt select a data (just wants to go with the current one) then the setOnDateChangeListener will never get triggered so your TextView wont have the proper date.
