Turkey’s election chief declared the incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan winner of the run-off presidential election on May 28, 2023, extending his increasingly authoritarian rule into a third decade. Erdogan’s victory came despite rampant inflation in the country, which is still recovering from the deadly February earthquake that levelled entire cities.

He became the Prime Minister in 2003, then won the presidency in 2014 and then abolished the Prime Minister position altogether to accumulate power then got the constitution changed so he has the power to remove ministers and disband the parliament and run for a third term. He has in effect been the de facto leader of Turkey from 2003, 20 years, but it's important to make these distinctions.
