Does your cat have feline acne or bumps on his chin? In this video, Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DABT, board-certified veterinary specialist in emergency/critical care and toxicology, discusses feline acne. Yes, even cats get acne.

Feline acne appears as bumps under the chin. Simply removing plastic water and food bowls will help immensely. You can also try witch hazel or Stridex pads to wipe and blot the acne gently once or twice a day. Sometimes, topical antibiotics or oral antibiotics may be necessary. When in doubt, check with your veterinarian or dermatologist for help!

What a lovely older gentleman that cat is, and how lucky he is to have you.

I saw this video and decided to use witch hazel for my cat. I am writing a comment to confirm that it worked great but take time about 2 weeks. Thank you for helpful information.

Thank you for your straightforward, honest information! Everything else I’ve come across while researching this in hope of helping my cat has led to either pharmaceutical companies pushing their products, or appalling photos/videos of random creeps “self-treating” (removing) the blackheads or cyst at the expense of the cat’s safety. I now know the first steps to take clearing Duncan’s chin; He’ll be very happy if this does the trick and saves him an unnecessary car-trip to the vet! 😊🐾

I've used the witch hazel on my cats acne and changed out the plastic bowls and it worked great. I first wash the chin with cat soap and water to remove the black crust. It looked many times better and helped with itching.

Thank you Dr. Lee! My kitten was starting to lose her hair in her chin after we mistakenly though it was just crusted dirt. This treatment worked for her. She is well now. Thank you again! 💖

Stridex pads contain salicylic acid, which can be toxic to cats. Every other resource I've seen suggests chlorhexidine, for which you can get specifically-pet-safe wipes.

Good advice. Used to work for a veterinarian. We also advised taking away plastic bowls.

We actually use glass and ceramic bowls. I believe it's because we just switched from grain free food to fancy feast due to it being easier for my senior kitty to eat. But I noticed that the fancy feast does have higher oils in it. So I think this is why my male cat is getting the feline acne.

I'm glad I saw this video. I just saw a video of some goober squeezing pimples on a hairless cat's tail. Seriously? Please tell me that they shouldn't be squeezing those pimples. That poor cat. Thank you for your video.

I highly recommend and exfoliation type clearasil pad or as we had back then, a buff puff. This is a must to exfoliate the dead skin cells and make it easier to remove with a blackhead remover that can be found at any beauty supply store. We would clean the area with a clearasil pad. If it was cycstic acne, we would gently exfoliate, and then We would apply a cornstarch and water paste to dry the acne out. Once it had a head on it, we would gently remove with the blackhead remover and follow up with a clearasil pad.

Hi, I just noticed my cat having a small pink pimple under his chin. Yes, I have been giving him his food on a plastic small bowl that has one side for food and the other for water. I’ve been doing this for about 7 years now, and I didn’t think it would be a problem. I’m going to change it asap and try out your advice. Thank you and wish us luck! ❤ 🙏

My cat had this before. I got all stainless bowls for food and water and used Stridex pads and witch hazel. Cleared it up. It would come back so I would do the same thing again until cleared up.

My cat came down with a nasty black heads around his mouth. We use metal bowls. I am not sure what caused the outbreak. I purchased Chlorhexidine pads for cats. I am hoping it clears up the acne.
