Hi everybody, special transcription today 'cause this is a legendary more than 3 minutes long guitar solo entirely performed by two guitar players (Gary Rossington and Allen Collins from Lynyrd Skynyrd). I like to describe this one as a lick's composition where the parts of the two guitars intertwine masterfully, for the most they are in unison, sometimes they intertwine into two similar parts rhythmically interlocked, sometimes they are call and answer style and still at other moments they are into two independent melodies. So if you wanna perform this (also with your band) you can play Guitar 1, if in your band you are two guitarists you can give your mate the part of Guitar 2 or if you just wanna challenge with this you can always perform Guitar 1 and also Guitar 2 (I'll leave you links to download all backing tracks, one for each case). You can also learn just the licks you like more.
Since the solo is that long and is made this way I already divided it into each different lick section (many of these licks are repeated in "ostinato") and now let's spend a few words about the trickiest parts!

GUITAR SOLO TIPS:
- THEME: that's quiet easy, be careful with the pre-bending and with timing of the last six notes, 8th and 4th, 8th and 4th, 8th and 4th; we can call this situation 3 on 4 because a 4th is long two 8ths so the ostinato is 3 8ths long and repeating it creates a rhythmic exchange of accents. We will find this kind of situation many other times along the solo and each time tapping your foot on the 4ths will give you the right rhythmic effect.
- LICK 1: you have to regularize the ostinato at the end of the theme, each bending is on downbeat.
- LICK 2: start with downstroke each group of three notes.
- LICK 3: this is a regular classic pentatonic ostinato lick in 16ths, Guitar 2 starts first.
- LICK 4: between bars 22 and 23 there is a 3 on 4 16ths lick, then is same stuff as LICK 1 on another strings set.
- LICK 5: don't worry about unregular groupings, you just have to speed up the end of the previous lick.
- LICK 6: that's another 3 on 4 stuff.
- LICK 7: this lick is slightly different between the two guitars but the play the same phrases inverted then go unison at the end.
- LICK 8: that's my fave one, another 3 on 4 stuff. From here Guitar 2 goes in the theme while Guitar 1 continue soloing.
- LICK 9: just for Guitar 1, Guitar 2 is already playing the theme.
- LICK 10: maybe the easiest of the solo but guitars make a call and answer in bars 54, 55.
- LICK 11: swithc to Major Pentatonic and be careful here the two guitars are different.
- LICK 12: another 3 on 4 ostinato but Guitar 1 starts teo 16ths late than Guitar 2 so that's a cool interlock.
- LICK 13: this is regular and in unison, I suggest to start with an upstroke each time on the first string.
- LICK 14: this is a triad ostinato (like what Jimmy Page plays at the end of Stairway's guitar solo), speed up from the previous lick.
- LICK 15: this is a phrasing more than a lick, two guitars are slightly different.
- LICK 16: couple of regular unison licks here.
- LICK 17: Guitar 1 repeats LICK 8 while Guitar 2 is phrasing on Major Pentatonic.
- LICK 18: here Guitars 1 and 2 are different and we're going into the final part of the solo.
- LICK 19: this is a rhythmic interlock with Major Pentatonic, if you play Guitar 2 you can keep your pinkie in the note D at the 15th fret.
- LICK 20: like LICK 19 but Guitar 1 goes in the LICK1/4 stuff.
- LICK 21: Guitar 1 is the same ostinato back in Minor Pentatonic.
- LICK 22: back to unison and ostinato lick in 1st and 2nd string.
- LICK 23: major version of LICK 22, but here is harder because of the small frets, keep your fingers for bending ond the 2nd string.
- LICK 24: this is another phrasing, kind of outro theme.
- LICK 25: repeat LICK 13.
- LICK 26: Guitar 1 is like LICK 15 while Guitar 2 continues the previous ostinato and close in a different way.
