You should note that there are 2 types of the innermost filter pads available. The standard as installed (black one side, white the other) is PolyCarbon. You can also get a PolyMax version. The PolyMax is more expensive and is good for Nitrate removal and crystal clear water. I prefer to use the PolyMax in the U4 as I run the U4 along with a 307 which does the majority of the work. Incidentally, those cheap compatible ones on Amazon/eBay are all PolyCarbon and don’t seem to be as thick or trap as much crud as the genuine Fluval ones. I also recommend adding Seachem Matrix media as the small quantity of media supplied for the inner basket is insufficient. I used Matrix to completely fill the basket.

I runs my 6 foot tank with 2 fluval u4 doe's awesome job do I need the carbon filters in cheers

Why did the manufacturer change the design of the cartridges? What was their goal? The holes are made only for half of the cartridge. It's inefficient. In older versions, the holes were all over the cartridge area.

When i brought my 30 gallon Fluval i replaced the this filter after a month as it came with the setup. A tank my size is much better for a cannister filter. I understand it's not for everyone due to cost and possibly setting it up. You simply cannot beat them. Cannnister filters are M&S stuff. You pay for quilty. On my nano tanks i use both sponge and mini internal filters. I would like to try a hang on the back as i have never owned one before.
Sorry for gramma but i'm drinking as it's new years eve and we are very close to leaving the EU for good. I'm so excited.
