A Veterinary Perspective on the One Health Approach

In this presentation, Dr. Scholz provides an overview of the emergence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in dairy cattle. He discusses how this emergence serves as a case study that highlights the role of veterinary medicine and animal diseases in the One Health Model, which recognizes that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment.

Dr. Ryan Scholz assumed the role of State Veterinarian for the Oregon Department of Agriculture on Nov. 2, 2020. He brings extensive experience in emergency management and animal disease control, overseeing the health of all livestock in Oregon. Since joining ODA in 2012, Dr. Scholz has made significant contributions, particularly in technological advancements within the Animal Health Program. He also served as Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, leading animal rescue efforts during the 2018 Camp Fire in California and coordinating animal evacuations during Oregon wildfires. As State Veterinarian, Dr. Scholz focuses on preventing and tracking livestock diseases, supporting practicing veterinarians, implementing animal health regulations, and coordinating with the Oregon Health Authority on zoonotic diseases like rabies. Recently, his team has been monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in animal populations and communicating potential risks associated with the virus.
