In this episode, we cover the history of Augustin-Louis Cauchy, a 19th century French mathematician, engineer, and physicist who was notable for developing a great majority of the foundations of complex analysis, and is only second to Euler in terms of mathematical productivity.

I go a bit deeper into the mathematics in this video, but still the primary focus is on Cauchy's history.

Picture Cauchy at a party, standing by the punch bowl. Instead of mingling, he's carefully analyzing the circular rim of the bowl. When someone asks him what he's doing, he replies, "Just making sure the punch is analytic within and on this curve. Wouldn’t want any non-zero residues floating around in there!"

Later, when someone spikes the punch, Cauchy immediately notices. "Aha!" he exclaims, "A pole of order one! I knew something was off—this drink just became a bit more singular."

Cauchy was truly a giant. So much of the technology we take for granted now ultimately depends on insights made by Cauchy. Laplace, Fourier, Hilbert etc. It's all derivative, and/or Cauchy made it rigorous. And it all started with Euler, Leibniz and Newton.

Can you imagine that? Back in the Age of Monarchs, the various monarchs "fought" over noteworthy members of academia, and would "lay down a red carpet" to entice them to teach in the monarch's own country.

I imagine Cauchy just didn't want to argue with Abel and didn't feel inclined to hold any punches that weren't made in the interest of reason. These people came up with limits, they were not wreckless/unscrupulous. Overly cautious, perhaps.
