Great tip! If you use a 1/8" bit to put staggered holes every other degree mark than you can use any random nail to do the same short cut.

This tip has been around for along time, u can also use stair gauges on framing squares and Sheetrock T-squares. On a speed square all you need is a 3/8 or 1/2 bolt/nut in the angled slot depending on slot size.(speed squares vary depending manufacturer). Stair gauges work well on just a piece of metal flat stock also.

I found a Stanley square last year that has an adjustable pendulum on it. I got it for this reason so my help could be consistent.

Thought I might learn something, maybe next time

There is also a square called the Britton square, that has an articulating locking arm for the same use!

I have a Stanley adjustable quik-square, it has a thumb-screw to lock in your preferred pitch angle. And it fits in my tool belt.

Or you could cut one board and use it as a scribe and then then just mark the length and use the scribe board

As a person that’s done both woodworking, and carpentry work for a long time, I can’t believe I never seen that little tool before.

I've never seen one of those. Where do I get one?

Why did the board reappear after you cut it?

You can also use it to cut stair stringers. 😮

That's cool but I always make a pattern or jig with stop boards on the top of it and that works really well especially when you're cutting a lot of the same angle like with rappers or Jack rafters for a hip roof and if you're real smart you go ahead and make that pattern with the tail cut on it all so that way you can Mark both ends and get them correct every single time. Just food for thought.

I'm disappointed I didn't think of that myself. Nice tip

You’ll never get 16 on Center doing this. What do I mean? Who knows, I’ve had two carpenters ask me if my barn I need work on is 16 on center in the past couple days and just keep saying it.

...and I need to know this when? Maybe when I forget how to make a pattern? Which is how I was taught to set up to layout for multiple like cuts 40+ yrs ago and is the best and proper way. I have used stops similar to these when laying out my stair PATTERN and then I use it to lay the other two out lol.
