The Science of Stress: Exploring Hans Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) Theory
Показать описание
Hans Selye's seminal work in 1956 introduced the concept of stress through his General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) model, delineating the body's response to stressors across three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. The alarm stage triggers the "fight or flight" response, characterized by heightened physiological arousal facilitated by the sympathetic nervous system and stress hormone release. In the subsequent stage of resistance, the body attempts to adapt to persistent stressors by maintaining elevated physiological responses. However, prolonged exposure may lead to the stage of exhaustion, where adaptive mechanisms become overwhelmed, predisposing individuals to physical and emotional health issues.
